Club for Growth: Fiscal cliff vote won't be sole gauge of support or challenge

Source: The Hill

The powerful fiscally conservative Club for Growth won't look for primary challengers to the 85 Republicans who backed the bill to avoid the "fiscal cliff" solely because of that vote, the group's head told The Hill on Wednesday.

"We do 25 or so key votes per session and this will be one of those," Club for Growth President Chris Chocola said, pointing out that some staunch conservatives, including former Club for Growth President Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), voted for the fiscal-cliff deal.

"We tend to not make decisions not based on one vote," he said. "This will contribute to the pattern but it won't be the only factor in any decision."

The group has played a big role in defeating a number of Republicans in House and Senate primaries, most recently spending millions of dollars to help Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock (R) defeat outgoing Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) last year and help incoming Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) win his primary over a better-funded opponent. It was also very active during the 2011 debt-ceiling debate.

Its groups like these, which represents wealthy cabals capable of funneling millions of dollars into primary elections throughout the Country that had lead to the current dysfunction of the Republican party. When you have groups that serve as fronts for hiding their millionaire donors and corporate contributors able to intimidate Republican members of Congress nationwide, you have an entire political party that simply is not accountable to the public. If you displease the Club, the Club will dump millions into your race to replace you with a more pliant lackey.

The Club for Growth, founded in 1999, is a “heavy hitter” a conservative political action group that promotes fiscally conservative public policies with a lot of money and clout that makes it the 8th largest giver to political campaigns by OS estimates. It used to operate below the radar, a group that Republican candidates fought to gain sponsorship from, until the 2010 elections and the uproar in Wisconsin over Governor Walker’s union-busting. The Club is primarily a conduit for its bigger givers to give to “outside” organizations via the Club’s 527, then funnel the money directly to aid candidates, either with attack ads, or with supportive position ads, that could not be donated due to the limits in individual giving directly to a candidate
