Gerard Depardieu 'granted Russian citizenship'
Source: BBC News
French actor Gerard Depardieu has obtained Russian citizenship, according to a brief statement posted on the Kremlin website.
"Vladimir Putin has signed a decree granting Russian citizenship to Gerard Depardieu," the message read.
Mr Depardieu recently announced he would give up his French passport after the government criticised his decision to move abroad to avoid higher taxes.
In December, Mr Putin said he would be happy to welcome the actor in Russia.

This is a reaction / in connection with the intended 75% top marginal rate of tax in France. He had originally said he'd move over the border into Belgium.

(56,582 posts)So the Alec Baldwin Dramatics LLC (or whatever he calls it) receives payment from the movie LLC, pays at the lower corporate rate, and pays Alec Baldwin a "salary" over the next several years. This both avoids higher tax rates and sees actors through years where they don't get parts.
That said, while 75% is not in any absolute sense too high for a top marginal rate, this shows a disadvantage of moving to that when neighboring countries' rates are much lower.

(26,060 posts)And that's my point. Maybe the French will miss him but considering he cares more about his money than he does his country, I'm sure the French get over it quickly. Hope his cash will keep him warm at night.

(37 posts)The French see and approach the world quite differently than Americans and even most European countries. The main reason why people think the French hate us is because we really do not understand them.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)and other than travelling to and from Europe for the last 20 years for both business and vacations, I can't say I can get into their minds. Do you think they'll raise a fuss about someone who cares more about his cash than his country?

(37 posts)Gerard Depardieu is the most visible person in this tax fight due to his celebrity status. however, there have been many stories coming out of France concerning wealthy French citizens wanting to leave or have left due to the high tax burdon. Patriotism does come into play but sooner or later, they'll forget and he'll obtain work again.

As for getting into the French minds. I lived there and its just not possible If you treat the French with respect and attempt to honor their customs, they will be cordial. Hell, i've seen a bunch of brash American college students in a bar in Saint Malo. They were still treated respectfully though everyone laughed at them behind their backs. Anyway, no one can really understand the differences until you try dating. That is a real mind fuck. What we consider dating here doesn't really exist in France. And forget about meeting parents... that just doesn't happen unless you're about ready to walk down the aisle.

(26,060 posts)be an ugly American. I don't expect everyone to speak English - which I find is the biggest complaint coming from Europeans. Americans are much more casual in their clothes and I try and keep that in mind as well. About the taxes - let em leave - but I would make it very plain they were never going to step foot in France (or whereever) again.

(26,060 posts)I was pulling my stuff together to go home. I wondered if the fact that those part of the EU dont need passports to go to other EU countries was why he didn't choose one of them (or if they would refuse him) on that basis.

(42,239 posts)I would doubt he'd consider going to one of the countries not in that agreement - Romania whatever who are not allowed into that yet. UK and Ireland are not in it either but that's a technicality. Some soft details here for you : http://www.lonelyplanet.com/europe/travel-tips-and-articles/76920
I would doubt anyone would refuse him anyway - he's a character. Russian's use this ruse of moving to an EU country providing freedom of movement too - usually Spain of late.
I amended the other post re. the rape business when I got back from dancing - I'm hopeless using the Note for links whatever. From the Guardian article I concluded that Time itself must've retracted the statement which seems to have referred when he was 9 years old and as such may not have been literal rape. If you check his history you'll find that even at that early age he'd fallen in with a bad lot. I still don't understand how come France left it so late making rape an offense anyway.

(26,060 posts)and he did have quite the ride. I feel the same way about him as I do the losers here that say they're going to leave if they have to pay higher taxes. My attitude is "go, and know you'll never be allowed to return". He doesn't care about his country or the people in it who made him famous. Fuck him.
P.S. When reading up on him, I was reminded about the incident where he urinated on the airplane. The man simply has no class and France will be better off without him.
P.P.S. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of dancing do you do?

(42,239 posts)I could dance to R & R and New Orleans Jazz early sixties. My wife died young 1990 and a few years later needing something to occupy me in the evenings I accidentally discovered Lindy. I then spent best part of 7 years dancing every night of the week until I tired of trashing the value of new cars doing vast annual mileages and also was on a plane mid Atlantic to SF for a dance camp 9/11 which spooked me. I then drifted into listening to American Old Time traditional music and collecting a truly vast number of banjos which has given me numerous friends your side. I just dance a couple of times a week now - keeps me fit.
NYC is the home of Lindy : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savoy_Ballroom what was lovely about that place was that it was mixed race with no issues and the only hard and fast rule was that guys were not to remove their jackets.

(26,060 posts)and has been undergoing quite the renaissance for the last 20 years. My mom (a white Jewish woman) used to go to the Apollo all the time and still is (at 72) quite the dancer. I'm so sorry to hear about losing your wife so young and admire that you found such a positive way to move through the grief. While I love music (almost all kinds), all the dancing genes went to my twin.

which referred to this from 13 years earlier.
Just before the Academy Awards ceremony, Time magazine ran a profile that mistakenly suggested that the actor might have "participated" in a rape at the age of nine. The claim was based on an interview carried out 13 years earlier and was the result of an incorrect translation.

Rape wasn't made illegal in France until 1980 - not sure what preceded that.

Putin probably could get that through the Duma, but just in terms of mindset, income taxes aren't thought of by Russia as a general funding source.
