North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue won’t seek second term, sources say
North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue (D) is set to announce today that she will not seek reelection in 2012, according to two sources familiar with her plans.
Perdue, who turned 65 earlier this month, was set for a rematch of her 2008 race with former Charlotte mayor Pat McCrory (R), but she has been plagued by low approval ratings and faced some tough odds this year.
Sources say she has labored over her decision about whether to seek a second term. One source said she plans to announce she will step aside in a statement this afternoon.
Perdues office did not immediately response to a request for comment.

(5,061 posts)To everyone who supported her. Do we have anyone better than an incumbent governor to run? No. Her numbers may be low, but she would have to run against an actual opponent, and she will have Obama's coattails again.
I hope she gave a heads up to SOMEBODY who is a quality candidate so that they could start doing the legwork needed to run in November.

(5,559 posts)She is crooked scum; entirely worthless. McCrory would have been better for NC over the past 3 years. My hope in the next election is to see McCrory take the Governor's mansion and the state Dems take back the GA.

(3,827 posts)He is in the pockets of his Bank of America cronies. I will never vote for that man.
I understand that Bev road the Obama wave in 2008. She def wasn't the best candidate. IMO she is no better than Mike Easley. Both are on the same level of corruption.

(5,559 posts)I am very happy to see Bev go. She should probably be going to jail along with her staff members and colleagues already headed that way.

(61,418 posts)You are advocating for a Republican candidate without even knowing who the Democratic nominee for governor will be! This is insane.

(61,418 posts)We already have a highly destructive Republican state legislature. The last thing on earth we need is a Republican governor.

(61,418 posts)That used to be against the TOS of DU. I live in North Carolina and do not want a Republican governor. That would finish the state.

(26,080 posts)not to mention that kind of inflexibility is to close to that of the GOP.

I am a huge supporter of President Obama, but people on here who criticize his decisions are stances are acting as good Dems. Advocating and voting for a Republican over a Democratic is appalling, and a TOS.

(22,541 posts)should be enough to make ANY Democrat vote against them. Every single time, no exceptions.

(61,418 posts)It's not just same sex rights. The proposed constitutional amendment goes way beyond that. It would make unconstitutional ANY domestic arrangement other than marriage between a man and a woman. Heterosexual relationships would be affected too. Child protections and domestic violence protections would be wiped out for unmarried couples. Retired people living together would have their arrangements wiped out.
And this is just one small part of the damage that Republicans have wreaked in my state since they seized control in 2010 for the first time in more than a century. The governor is not perfect, but she's done the very best she could with a bad situation. We MUST have a Democrat as governor. This is a crisis.
I can't believe that I am reading DUers advocate for electing a Republican in North Carolina. Unbelievable.

(22,541 posts)We know that LGBT issues aren't on the front burner for a lot of people, even though they should be. Those folks need to know that their lives will be directly affected, too. It's like old testament law being codified today.

(3,758 posts)Especially in regard to her. I, for one, am very sad to see her go and think she's done a great job as governor but her hands were tied by the Republicans who arrived in 2010.

(112,920 posts)for his irresponsible and corrupt handling of Charlotte while he was mayor and especially for towing the Bush line throughout Bush's terms.

(112,920 posts)Oh yeah - he has a GREAT legacy in Charlotte - acres and acres of substandard housing developments sitting empty and rotting and hundreds of empty storefronts and abandoned box stores. That asshat's PROMISCUOUS push for continued building contributed to the loss in value of the existing home here in Charlotte.
McCrory is a Bush wannabe who spent his 2004 camera time pushing the image of Bush as a great president and leader while smearing Kerry with Rove lies in his effort to be a made man at BushInc. Yeah - he's all for returning to Bush economic policy.

It will be another close election. If the minorities come out in NC then they will make it a contest.
Romney doesn't have a lot of support here in the Tar Heel state. The Mormon issue is a big deal for the evangelicals. Gingrich is too extreme for the Independent voters of North Carolina. If the GOP had better candidates then NC would be bleeding red.

(3,827 posts)RALEIGH -- The Democrat who lost to Beverly Perdue in the 2008 primary for North Carolina governor says he's considering whether to run this year now that Perdue has announced she won't seek re-election.
Former State Treasurer Richard Moore told The Associated Press on Thursday that many people have contacted him asking him to get back into politics and try again for governor.
The 51-year-old Moore says he knows how to present the arguments for the Democratic cause but doesn't know if he's the right messenger. He says he doesn't know when he will make a decision. The campaign filing period starts Feb. 13.
