N.H.L. and Players Union Reach Tentative Agreement to End Lockout

By JEFF Z. KLEIN Published: January 6, 2013

The National Hockey League and its players union reached a tentative agreement on Sunday to end the lockout, after a marathon 16-hour negotiating session.

The end came at about 5 a.m. Sunday, the 113th day of the lockout, at a Midtown Manhattan hotel.

“Don Fehr and I are here to tell you that we have reached an agreement on a framework for a new collective bargaining agreement,” the N.H.L. commissioner Gary Bettman said, standing alongside Donald Fehr, the executive director of the N.H.L. Players’ Association. “We still have more work to do, but it’s good to be at this point.”

“Hopefully within a very few days,” Fehr said

Too bad this season had to be sacrificed. Put an asterisk next to the Cup winner and move on.

Did the owners finally figure out they were losing?

This was the stupidist thing that the league, and the owners could have done. They have a product that is not making it, that needs exposure, so what do they do? They do a lockout! Idiots. Bettman and the owners hurt themselves bad.

the owners came out of this deal with probably the biggest victory in sports labor relations history. The players got totally hosed and the only reason the lockout lasted as long as it did was that the players kept holding on, hoping they wouldn't get 100% screwed, instead they only got 98% screwed.

Everyone lost. They lost so much. Sure, they screwed the players. They lost fans. They were losing them hard. The NHL was, and will continue to lose fan base. They were doing well for a while, gaining US TV coverage, but this is going to kill them. So they screwed the players over. A lot of fans are not going to come back. Are they going to get US TV coverage again? I do not know.

Triple-header games? Do they just give the Stanley Cup to whoever shows up first as a participation trophy?
