Gun Control Deal Close; Could Come 'As Soon As Today': Source (NY)

Source: NY Daily News

Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders were on the verge Sunday night of finalizing a major gun-control deal that would give New York the nation’s toughest assault weapons ban, sources told the Daily News.

“An agreement could be reached as soon as [Monday],” said a source close to Sunday’s negotiations, which continued well into the evening.

Top aides to Cuomo, Senate GOP Leader Dean Skelos and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver have resolved disagreements over big-ticket provisions, and talks in recent days focused on the bill’s language.

“I can’t see anything killing this,” said state Sen. Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn). “The deal is going to get done.”

Lawmakers are bracing for a late night in the state Legislature as negotiations toward a tough new assault weapons ban and other gun-control measures appear just about done.

“I believe we’re very, very close to a final agreement, “ Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) told reporters Monday after speaking at a Family Planning rally at the Capitol.

Silver said there was “very little” blocking an agreement, with the biggest outstanding issue involving school security and how much school aid is needed to boost student protection.

“The clear thing is we are going to ban assault weapons,” Silver said. “We are going to eliminate all of the loopholes that existed previously…It will ban assault weapons, period . Even the pre-1994 will not be able to be transferred.
