Justice Dept. takes on itself in probe of 2001 anthrax attacks
Since it began a decade ago, the federal governments massive investigation of the 2001 anthrax attacks has been plagued by missteps and complications.
Investigators initially focused on the wrong man, then had to pay him a nearly $6 million settlement. In 2008, they accused another man, Bruce E. Ivins, who killed himself before he could go to trial.
Now, in the latest twist, the government has argued against itself.
In documents deep in the files of a recently settled Florida lawsuit, Justice Department civil attorneys contradicted their own departments conclusion that Ivins was unquestionably the anthrax killer. The lawyers said the type of anthrax in Ivinss lab was radically different from the deadly anthrax. They cited several witnesses who said Ivins was innocent, and they suggested that a private laboratory in Ohio could have been involved in the attacks.

(163,986 posts)to the victim's family by creating doubt that Ft. Detrick was involved.
"Byrne said Ivins didnt have the technical skill to make the extremely fine powder and both said the Fort Detrick labs equipment could not have dried the anthrax so it could be turned into powder without contaminating parts of the facility."
Because no one will sue them and win for merely fingering the wrong person but the victim is still dead and that case will cost money.

(90,061 posts)It seems reasonable from my own experience. I assume that the parties to that would not want the subject re-opened now, but I admit I'm speculating.

(163,986 posts)at Ft. Detrick and risk blowing up the case against Ivins because no one has the resources to blow it up to the point where it would be a problem for the FBI, let alone for Obama.
In following the story, it looked like every point the FBI tried to make was blown up so Mueller had to go with "the science nobody understands will vindicate us" and then, it didn't. And still, nobody did anything about it, including Leahy who had to chair that hearing.
The funny thing for me is that I have talked to Meryl Nass, Ivin's lawyer Kemp (briefly) and Mr. Byrne and Mr. Andrews and agree with them that it wasn't Ivins or Ft. Detrick. I still don't know any scientists that agree with Mueller that it was Ivins although I haven't been following very closely this year.

(90,061 posts)My line of thought goes like this:
1.) This about WMD, "spooky" stuff, "national security" stuff.
2.) Hence there are no people who both know the score and want to inform us, certainly not without permission. They will be arrested.
3.) It seems clear that there has been a good deal of funny business surrounding the case, which indirectly supports #1 & #2. The government statements are awash in handwaving and specious arguments, you know like: "you're entitled to your own opinions, but if you are a reasonable person you have to agree with me." And yet they claim to have incontrovertible evidence Ivins did it, so where is it?
4.) So I assume I'm being lied to, without knowing how much, or what's being hidden, so I don't infer anything based on what's been said, e.g. I don't know who did it, but I would hazard a guess that it's neither of the two candidates the government has advanced.
5.) Mr. Ivins being a "suicide" does make him a convenient perp, dead guys don't argue.
---
However, you're right, I don't see how this ties to Obama, or means he is doing anything about it, no such luck, so forget that, maybe I should thank your for making me read it carefully.

1. why did the white house start taking antibiotics immediately after 9/11?
2. what was the alleged motivation of ivins to send to those particular targets? (this might be in the fbi report from 2010)
the targets were a bit curious...

(57,936 posts)Robert Stevens (1938 - October 5, 2001) was a photo editor for the Florida based tabloid, Sun, employed by American Media Inc. He was the first fatality linked to the 2001 anthrax attacks in the United States. He died of pulmonary anthrax after inhaling anthrax spores from a letter that is believed to have arrived at the American Media offices in Boca Raton, Florida. He was 63 years old.

Stevens, a photo editor for The Sun, is believed to have contracted the disease from a tainted letter sent to the Palm Beach County office building that also housed the National Enquirer and Globe.
A mailroom employee, Ernesto Blanco (case 7), also was infected with anthrax. He spent three weeks in the hospital and was once near death, his doctors said. But he recovered and still works at AMI's new building.

Was that question ever answered? Why those targets? Why were they the first?

(163,986 posts)think they could mail anthrax and only hit the addressee? That's ridiculous in its face.

(82,849 posts)I see these documents were unearthed from a settled civil case in Florida. Will this contradiction lead to anything? Or did the DOJ settle this civil case to avoid answering a bunch of unpleasant questions, and now that the case is all done, that's it, and we're not going to be lookin' backwards to the past, and yadda yadda yadda.

(9,141 posts)The real reason was because the FBI had CLOSED IVINS IN COMPLETELY! Harassing him at every turn. CAmped outside his house and office and following him closely just to harass. Ivins was innocent...had no motive...and this anthrax incident was sent to the only senators who stood to block the Patriot Act. What is not mentioned in this article is the FBI agent who burned down the lab (by accident) and then was given a medal for the investigation. This investigation was totally mishandled and caused more damage than aid.
