If the gun advocates behind this years inaugural Gun Appreciation Day had hoped to use the days festivities to build support for their anti-regulation platform, they are going to have to wait another year.
Emergency personnel had to be called to the scene of the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina after a gun accidentally discharged and shot two people at the shows safety check-in booth just after 1 pm. Both victims were transported to an area hospital, and the Raleigh Fire Department announced that the show would be closed for the rest of the day.

UPDATES BELOW
[div class="excerpt"]UPDATED: 5 People Shot At 3 Different Gun Shows On Gun Appreciation Day
Update
Two similar incidents occurred at entirely separate gun shows in the Midwest, one in the Cleveland suburb of Medina, Ohio and the other at the state fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. In Ohio, the local ABC affiliate reports that one individual was brought to a hospital by EMS, and in Indiana Channel 8 WISH says that an individual shot himself in the hand while trying to reload his gun in the show parking lot. That brings the tally to 4 victims of gun violence so far at three different gun shows during the countrys first Gun Appreciation Day.
Update
CNN is reporting that three people were injured at the gun show in Raleigh, not two as originally reported. All were victims of a shotgun that fired while the owner was removing it from a case.

(4,444 posts)started to take it out of the case and it went off. Stored loaded. dumbass. I hope all three victims sue him. One was hurt badly. One or two of the victims were cops. They aren't allowing outside guns tomorrow.
I think, if they have to have these shows only licensed dealers should be allowed. But, there's way too much money involved. You should have seen the video of people scattering they played on the news.

(12,165 posts)What did they expect? This whole event is organized by extremists in order to attract more extremists. Too bad they didn't think through what they needed to do with the extremists with assault weapons once they're there.

(18,624 posts)Unlike the typical owner who may keep a pistol in the bedroom drawer, or a hunting rifle in the closet, these people have a strange need to show them off in public.
They want others to see their massive firepower, like the guy in the park wearing an overcoat who exposes himself to young girls. It's all about shock value. By that measure, they think it's so impressive they just can't keep it in their pants, and it's all too likely to go off and hit someone. Even worse, they knew the TV cameras were showing up.
It shames me as a gun owner that too many people put me in the same boat with these perverted firearm exhibitionists. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but sometimes a handgun is a dick, and this firearm free for all was promoted to attract dicks by the drove.
I really wish the Conservative Coalition, that dreamed this stunt up, would quit trying to help.

(Reuters) - Three people including a retired sheriff's deputy were wounded on Saturday at a gun show in North Carolina when a 12-gauge shotgun accidentally discharged as its owner was taking it out of its case, state officials said.

(3,911 posts)...is good accidental gun discharges. I guess they would pre-emptively accidentlly shoot the bad guns, preventing them from accidentally firing. Or something.

(1,397 posts)From time to time I read something that is SO STUPID, all I can do in response is to slam my head into my desk, over and over and over.
This is one of those times: ". . . a shotgun that fired while the owner was removing it from a case. . . "
I own guns. Several of them. I hunt and shoot.
Placing a loaded weapon into a case is STUPID. And these are the highly-skilled, trained, experienced gun-handlers who are going to protect our children from the bad guys. I'll take the bad guys any day over these fools.

(978 posts)"accidental discharge"
Guns don't kill people, they just accidentally discharge.
We'll be hearing the "accidental discharge" excuse for days following this nonsense.

They could play "who can take the pin out the most times in a minute without dropping the grenade" although we will need video to be able to designate the winner.
