PPP: Al Franken In Comfortable Position For Re-Election

Source: TPM

TOM KLUDT 3:08 PM EST, TUESDAY JANUARY 22, 2013

Boasting an approval rating above 50 percent, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) is in a strong position to secure re-election next year, according to a survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling released Tuesday.

Fifty-two percent of Minnesota voters approve of the job their junior senator is doing, compared with 41 percent who disapprove. The poll also showed Franken topping all four would-be Republican challengers in hypothetical matchups, including former Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN).

In a rematch of the 2008 contest, 50 percent of voters gave the edge to Franken while 44 percent said they prefer Coleman, who has already said that he will not run in 2014. Franken claimed an even wider margin over Bachmann in the poll, topping the tea party favorite 54 percent to 40 percent.

He isn't backtracking or waffling... DonViejo Jan 2013 #12
Thanks. He probably realized that he needed to make a clarifying statement. Glad he did. Liberal_Stalwart71 Jan 2013 #13

Imagine the hilarity that would ensue if Crazy Eyes actually garnered the repug nod to run against Senator Franken, who would have a literal field day, be-boppin' & scattin' all over her clown circus of a campaign.

Do you really think there will be room for a Bachmann in the SENATE?

This would prove that there really is a God. Oh please please please let this be the matchup. Al has never had so much material to work with...

If the Republicans moved left, maybe the Democrats could move left.

And c'mon, you know that a Bachmann for Senate campaign pretty much decides 2014 for Franken.

More importantly a Bachmann Senate candidacy would give us a good chance to pick up a seat.

But there is another possibility that would make us both happy. Bachman runs in the primary and gets trounced by a moderate Republican who loses to Al and Bachmann goes on to lose her seat as well. Win win win.

He was quite valuable as a commentator. As an elected official, he's been a bit safe and dull.

backtracking on his position came from an aide, Franken needed to clarify. Actually, I think TPM blew the original story; the aide was asked what Franken's position was and he responded "I don't know." TPM ran wild with it.
