(Oakland mayor) Quan says she'll call national Occupy leaders

Faced with ever-increasing violence between police and Occupy protesters, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan is seeking help from a new source: Occupy Wall Street.

Quan plans to ask leaders of the national Occupy movement to convince their Oakland cohorts to shun violence during their protests over economic inequality, officials said Monday.

"This splinter group inside Occupy Oakland - the ones who advocate violence - are not in sync with the rest of the movement," said Sue Piper, Quan's spokeswoman. "People who have been involved with the national movement - and a lot of people who live in Oakland - are really fed up with this splinter group. This is not what Occupy is supposed to be about."

City officials estimated that about 400 people were arrested Saturday night following protesters' attempt to take over the vacant Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center near Lake Merritt. Three police officers and several protesters were injured in a melee that stretched across downtown.

they were available for 24/7 surveillance. The Mayor is the one who wanted them elsewhere.

she could more efficiently and effectively quell the 'violence' by talking to her police department!

I present Jean Quan. She, a mayor whose goons have busted quite a few heads of innocent protestors, is now asking the "leaders" of the movement to marginalize the more action-minded and defensive aspects of the group. She is powerless against OWS, and more mayors will find themselves in the same boat soon if they don't wise up. Jean Quan is a tool of the 1%. WE are the 99%, we shall rule.

and look within your police department to find members of that splinter group before branching out to other OWS's.

The property damage, the firecrackers thrown, the flag-burning?

Did the police over-react? Undoubtedly.

But why would you disparage someone who is at least making an effort to avoid combative situations in the future? How would YOU have prevented a large number of people from taking over a public building when your job was to stop them?

Did OWS apologize for the damage? Have they offered to help repair things? For that matter, have the Oakland police apologized for their over-reactions?

No one has apologized that I'm aware of. I'm sure OWS will have another 'Moving In' day soon that will end the same way this one did -people getting injured and nothing being done to change our economic future.

Someone needs to stop this senseless fighting. I don't see anyone from OWS making a similar effort.

I think the flag burning, property smashing activity is totally counterproductive. But the statement from Quan in itself just made my head spin.
