U.K. distillery accidentally flushes whiskey into sewer

Source: CBS News

LONDON A massive spill at a Chivas plant has sent the smell of spirits flowing through a Scottish sewer and sorrow coursing through the hearts of Scotch whisky fans.

Chivas Brothers Ltd. spokeswoman Jennifer Stevenson says the group is investigating what she described as an "accidental loss" of spirit at the company's bottling plant in Dumbarton, Scotland on Feb. 26.

She declined to estimate how much of the bulk whisky had been lost, saying only that it was less than the 4,755 gallons mentioned in media reports.

BBC News reported that workers who were cleaning equipment during the night shift on Tuesday accidentally flushed away thousands of liters of whisky instead of waste water.

After working 30 years in a dairy processing plant surrounded by dozens of tanks hundreds of valves and pumps and a myriad of pipes all controlled by buttons on a command board its not hard to imagine a rookie night cleaner pushing the wrong button.

It is more of a waste to poison oneself by drinking this though. I would prefer there to be no demand for this toxic product in the first place.

And I protect my health in real time by not being so forthcoming usually in my disgust of alcohol.

I grew up in a single parent family as the oldest of six fending offf an alcoholic mother, and I have the post tramatic stress disorder (PTSD) to show for it.

Sorry to raise your hackles, I suppose my honesty had no place here on this thread. I guess that is why I am usually not so forthcoming of this opinion in real time.

I do't see where you get that. In any event, I do not dispise anyone I know who is a social drinker or alcoholic. But it's true I don't like their drugs of choice.

by very vulnerable people riding bicycles. I am enabling bicyclists to be safe from what few drinkers I can get to use me to drive them when going to the same club or parties.

There are more ways to look at this then your level of enabler.

I want pedestrians, other non-drinking drivers and bicyclists to be safer. The drinkers will drink regardless of what I do or say. I want fewer of these people endangering themselves and others.

On the other hand, there have been reports of sightings of hundreds of rats acting erratically through the city of Dumbarton.

It's whisky. And it's made in Scotland.

It's not very good Scotch whisky, but it is what it is.

It's funny, because my father was toting a bottle of Crown Royal, in its purple bag, through the airport many years ago, when he dropped it. You really would have seen a grown man cry, lol!
