Italy court sentences Berlusconi to 1 year jail in wiretap trial

Thu Mar 7, 2013 6:10am EST

MILAN (Reuters) - An Italian court on Thursday sentenced former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to a one-year jail term for making public the taped contents of a confidential phone call in a case related to a 2005 banking scandal.

The sentence, which was read in court by the judge, came as Berlusconi is facing two other trials for alleged tax fraud and paying for sex with an underage prostitute.

Prosecutors in the wiretap case had asked for a one-year jail term for the media tycoon.

Berlusconi, who has denied any wrongdoing, can seek to have the decision overturned before a court of appeal.

Still the same ol' same ol' though :

Berlusconi, who has denied any wrongdoing, can seek to have the decision overturned before a court of appeal.

Under Italian law, he is not expected to serve any prison term until all possible appeal trials have been carried out.

but I doubt that he will serve one day in prison. He will wiggle himself out of it again - unfortunately

Italy's former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been convicted and sentenced to a year in jail over an illegal wiretap.

He was accused of arranging for a police wiretap concerning a political rival to be leaked and published in a newspaper run by his brother.

He is presently appealing against another conviction and faces two more verdicts in the coming weeks.

One of the rulings expected later this month is about tax fraud, and the other trial concerns allegations the he paid for sex with an underage prostitute.

In October last year, Mr Berlusconi was convicted in another tax fraud case and sentenced to a year in jail.

What's actually needed are about 100 guilty charges with 1 year sentences to run consecutively.

Palazzo Chig is the Italian PM's official residence (seen in background here behind Silvio and crack Italian troops) and in which he could serve the year of his sentence.

All will be well: Non abbiate paura, Silvio tornerà - a meno che non viene eletto Papa (unlikely, as he likes women).
