Egypt's Islamists warn giving women some rights could destroy society

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood warns that a U.N. declaration on women's rights could destroy society by allowing a woman to travel, work and use contraception without her husband's approval and letting her control family spending.

The Islamist movement that backs President Mohamed Mursi gave 10 reasons why Muslim countries should "reject and condemn" the declaration, which the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women is racing to negotiate a consensus deal on by Friday.

The Brotherhood, whose Freedom and Justice Party propelled Mursi to power in June, posted the statement on its website, www.ikhwanweb.com, and the website of the party on Thursday.

Egypt has joined Iran, Russia and the Vatican - dubbed an "unholy alliance" by some diplomats - in threatening to derail the women's rights declaration by objecting to language on sexual, reproductive and gay rights.

Ask any of them and they will talk about how the brotherhood has brought about a coup of their own.

Although they did somewhat cut a deal with the Devil (i.e. the Islamists) to get Mubarak out. They just didn't expect that devil to take over.

they were in the minority and they should've foreseen that. The Brotherhood were already in their parliament as independents under the old rules where they could only stand a such.

btw - I'm not defending anything here. Just pointing out the facts of life.

The only tiny upside is that in the cavalcade of Theocractic governments they are not (currently) amongst the most despicable.

Gee, an overly-conservative nation with a strong predominant religion... I wonder who they're going to elect if we take the hands out of the pro-west, relatively pro-Israel government which was generally nice to women and to the minority religions (Christians)?

Destroys society and prevents advancement. Religious fundamentalists damages the human condition more than any one factor I can think of.

Give all people their rights; restrict the controlling power of the whackos.

I mean, that's what religion's always been about -- control of wealth and control of the people who have/haven't it.

The Islamic world was prosperous in the Middle Ages while Europe in the grip of the Catholic Church suffered a decline in knowledge, technology and prosperity. When the Islamic leaders became more fundamentalist after the European Renaissance, the areas under their control entered their own Dark Age which continues to this day.

Look at the states today that are less prosperous - they are the ones whose politicians are following the precepts of the fundamentalist churches.

If the religious want to have more wealth, they need to relinquish control.

African Americans having rights will destroy American society, allowing women to have rights will destroy American society, allowing gay people to have rights will destroy American society, allowing people access to healthcare will destroy American society, limiting access to guns will destroy American society, blah, blah, blah.

It's time for the more developed countries in the world to start telling the
middle east that they are living in the dark ages.

Like it or not - Sooner or later they will evolve.

The men are just trying to keep women in their place so they have someone to kick
when they get pissed off.

How far we've come technologically
How slowly we change mentally.

Gee, why did "Republican" just come to mind?

Societies that deny human rights to all their members must change or get left behind. You can't really compete as a modern society if you are wasting all that talent and spending your energy on internal repression and control.
