Susan G. Komen Foundation Also Stops Funding Embryonic Stem Cell Research
In addition to pulling funds from Planned Parenthood for The Susan G. Komen Foundation also decided to stop funding embryonic stem cell research centers making it fully transparent the organization has evolved from non-political non-profit to a partisan advocacy organization.
That means the loss of $3.75 million to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, $4.5 million to the University of Kansas Medical Center, $1 million to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, $1 million to the Society for Womens Health Research, and $600,000 to Yale University. Thats a loss of nearly $12 million dollars in research money to eradicate breast cancer this year alone.
This is a new position for the organization which had previously supported all sorts of scientific research targeted at finding a cure for breast cancer and saving womens lives. Its new position is that the organization will categorically no longer support any embryonic stem cell research.
Instead of the loud, clumsy announcement Komen made in severing ties with Planned Parenthood, this is a decision they quietly slipped in during November 2011. After all, with this new pro-life branding you would think the Susan G. Komen Foundation would want to crow about its policy change since embryonic stem cell research is an issue near and dear to the anti-choice crowd Komen now serves.

Of course, there are a few idiots who support this move. I was not to surprised when some "moran" posted that she couldn't understand how Komen had ever support PP when everybody knows about the link between abortion and breast cancer.

We can do better, some fights transcend politics.

They'd like to divert those tax dollars to private industry and private charities like Komen that will promote a for-profit agenda.

(51,520 posts)Not only will I NEVER give money to Koman again (in fact I donated to Planned Parenthood yesterday), but I would love to see someone file a class action suit against Koman for fraud. I'd join it. I gave Koman $100 last summer for breast cancer research--not realizing they were going to defund breast cancer research--or at least $12 million of it.

(61,539 posts)That's why it's important to research the organization before you give it money. I had no idea that Susan G. Komen spent so little of its fundraising income on actual research and services. Most of the money they raise goes right back into more fundraising, junk trinkets made in China, and exorbitant salaries of the executives.

(7,670 posts)which is a good thing IMO. We need to move cancer treatment money to a group with more transparency - and one that cares about ALL rights of women - and certainly away from groups that follow and do what far right wackos want. It should be a group where almost all the money goes to research and treatment - not $75 MILLION a year to the admins and for "fundraising" - which is how the Komen Foundation allocated their money last year. The Komen Foundation should be ashamed of itself - in more ways than one. I applaud those who have quit over their recent embrace of far right politics over helping women. Hopefully out of this whole mess will emerge a better, stronger breast cancer group than the Kormen Foundation - women deserve better.
