Pietro Grasso, a former anti-mafia investigator, was elected speaker of the upper house or Senate, while Laura Boldrini, a respected former spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, was chosen as the speaker of the lower house or Chamber of Deputies.
There was further humiliation for Mr Berlusconi when he turned up to vote in the election for the speakers on Saturday.
Protesters jeered and whistled as he entered parliament, shouting "Buffone!" ("Clown!" .
He yelled back: "You should be ashamed, you are poor, ignorant fools."
Mr Berlusconi looked pale and haggard, having spent all week in hospital being treated for eye problems. He wore sunglasses and was not wearing the heavy foundation makeup that normally gives his face a tangerine glow.
