Michelle Shocked makes shocking statement.

Source: Dangerous Minds

Michelle Shocked committed career suicide last night at a club appearance in San Francisco. The “Texas troubadour” displayed some red state intolerance when she announced from the stage that “God hates fags.” Apparently the former skateboard punk wasn’t kidding.

Michelle Shocked, known for living up to her surname, cleared out San Francisco club Yoshi’s last night, and shut down the venue, after she went on an anti-gay tirade, which she summed up by saying, ”You can go on Twitter and say ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.’”

And they did.

Yes, according to folks who were there – and Twitter – she really did say this – in San Francisco of all places!

when it seemed like the rest of the country had fallen into line behind Reagan and his crew. I haven't listened to her album in many ages, although I think I still have it somewhere.

I think she was likely hammered. Booze is not a reliable high for doing your best on stage, sometimes it degenerates you into a caricature.

I do know she's in the Amen Corner in some wingnut church these days, which is where the rant came from. A stint in rehab followed by a different drug to prep for shows might deodorize her. Then again, maybe this is who she is now.

Reminds me of the Elvis Costello/Bonnie Bramlett confrontation, wherein Elvis called Ray Charles the N-word because he was trying to provoke Ms. Bramlett during an argument. And he was drunk.

Saying "God Hates Fags", quoting Rev. Phelps onstage in SF? Her track record earns the benefit of my doubt, though it appears she now attends an evangelical church in LA.

And seriously, if you've never heard of her, get out more.

I know nothing of that church, but I've never heard Stevie Wonder preach hate - quite the opposite actually. Just because she goes to that church doesn't mean that's where she's picking up her bigotry. I've gone to several very liberal churches with very open and affirming attitudes towards homosexuality that had right-wing nutjobs amongst the congregation.

back when Rand Paul was scoring genuine points against Obama, just because someone agrees with you on some things does not mean they are not a right wing not job you need to keep away from power. Also, right wing nuts will always team with each other, rather than us, because deep down, they always hated us.

Imagine Michelle at Occupy Wall Street, walking right past gay rights activists, some of whom thought she was a comrade in arms, and who would have given her whatever little food or blankets needed. For her to do this is a sellout worthy of Thirty pieces of Silver.

The infantile obsession with purity and refusal to have any sort of organizational structure or message allowed the movement to get flooded with kooks.
Our local Occupy turned into a birther/troofer Ron Paul haven, and was last in the headlines here for organizing a rightwing gun nut rally, where they said Obama is 'a tyrant' for trying to take yer shotguns away and stuff.

So it's no surprise that the now-rightwing Michelle would be there.

"This" being sitting in judgement of someone's sexual activity. It's the story of when Jesus saved an adultress from being stoned to death by saying, "You who is without sin may cast the first stone." He dispersed the crowd that way, by pointing out they were all sinners. Exactly the opposite of why Michelle's crowd dispersed last night as they all rightly pronounced her the sinner. I'm not certain I've actually heard of her. It sounds like a pretty generic punk name from the 80's, and I kinda-sorta think I've heard of her. Or maybe not.

It's kind of like someone who sees a beverage named CitriFizz in an article. It sounds like something in the sugary-drink genre that 7up, Sprite and Albertson's Citrus Sling occupy, so it's reasonable to think that you have heard of it.

Seriously - Citrus Sling. What does that even mean?

59. Janis Ian's take:
Tue Mar 19, 2013, 02:08 AM
Mar 2013

via Facebook

To people who keep asking me to comment on Michelle Shocked's virulent onstage attack on gay people, here it is:

Well, that's too bad. As a performer with 45 years of shows behind me, I've had walk-outs when I sang about interracial couples, and when I sang about AIDS, and walkouts more recently when I sang about gay marriage. I am the first to argue that I have a right to sing and speak about those things on stage, just as the audience has the right to walk out, object to the management, and ask for their money back if they feel deceived.

Our country is in large part founded on the concept of free speech - the right to speak your mind politically and socially. But there is a huge difference between "Free speech" and "Hate speech." It is sad when a talented person chooses to use that talent in the service of their own misplaced rage, and their disappointment in their own life.

I often wonder if people like this die and meet God, who will smack them upside the head and say "Did I really LOOK like I needed your help?!"

And isn't it odd to see someone who was so woman-identified turn a 360 degree like this?

Then again, 'Hell hath no fury...'"
