Michelle Shocked makes shocking statement.
Source: Dangerous Minds
Michelle Shocked committed career suicide last night at a club appearance in San Francisco. The Texas troubadour displayed some red state intolerance when she announced from the stage that God hates fags. Apparently the former skateboard punk wasnt kidding.
Michelle Shocked, known for living up to her surname, cleared out San Francisco club Yoshis last night, and shut down the venue, after she went on an anti-gay tirade, which she summed up by saying, You can go on Twitter and say Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.
And they did.
Yes, according to folks who were there and Twitter she really did say this in San Francisco of all places!

Yowza. I had no idea Michelle Shocked was a homophobic RWNJ. I learn something new every day.

I think she was likely hammered. Booze is not a reliable high for doing your best on stage, sometimes it degenerates you into a caricature.
I do know she's in the Amen Corner in some wingnut church these days, which is where the rant came from. A stint in rehab followed by a different drug to prep for shows might deodorize her. Then again, maybe this is who she is now.

Hell, I didn't even know she was still active as a performer.

(3,280 posts)What a legendary venue to disrespect in that way!
I saw Stanley Turrentine and Freddie Hubbard play some stunning jazz there back in the day. This was about two months before Turrentine's death. Sad to see someone disrespecting a place with such a history of great music with such hateful bile.

(3,280 posts)That name still carries a bit of the musical history with it. Legendary acts and musicians, etc... seems a shame she used it as a desperate plea for attention.

(33,252 posts)Reminds me of the Elvis Costello/Bonnie Bramlett confrontation, wherein Elvis called Ray Charles the N-word because he was trying to provoke Ms. Bramlett during an argument. And he was drunk.
Saying "God Hates Fags", quoting Rev. Phelps onstage in SF? Her track record earns the benefit of my doubt, though it appears she now attends an evangelical church in LA.
And seriously, if you've never heard of her, get out more.
Berlin Expat
(949 posts)but I actually didn't know she was still an active performer. I thought she'd retired or gone into producing or something.
I came across this interesting article as well.

I didn't know she went to a fundamentalist church. As I recall from the late 80s, her music struck me as fairly left-wing.

(10,974 posts)I know nothing of that church, but I've never heard Stevie Wonder preach hate - quite the opposite actually. Just because she goes to that church doesn't mean that's where she's picking up her bigotry. I've gone to several very liberal churches with very open and affirming attitudes towards homosexuality that had right-wing nutjobs amongst the congregation.

She spent a lot of time and energy on the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

(10,974 posts)She was big in Occupy LA apparently. And she's always been a big anarcho-socialist. But apparently since she found Jesus she's also turned into a big homophobe.
Some things I'm reading make it sound like she may be having mental health issues also. Either way, I'm, um, shocked, by this.
Kudos to the club owner for denouncing her, apologizing and offering refunds.

(13,616 posts)back when Rand Paul was scoring genuine points against Obama, just because someone agrees with you on some things does not mean they are not a right wing not job you need to keep away from power. Also, right wing nuts will always team with each other, rather than us, because deep down, they always hated us.
Imagine Michelle at Occupy Wall Street, walking right past gay rights activists, some of whom thought she was a comrade in arms, and who would have given her whatever little food or blankets needed. For her to do this is a sellout worthy of Thirty pieces of Silver.

(14,093 posts)The infantile obsession with purity and refusal to have any sort of organizational structure or message allowed the movement to get flooded with kooks.
Our local Occupy turned into a birther/troofer Ron Paul haven, and was last in the headlines here for organizing a rightwing gun nut rally, where they said Obama is 'a tyrant' for trying to take yer shotguns away and stuff.
So it's no surprise that the now-rightwing Michelle would be there.

(28,443 posts)"This" being sitting in judgement of someone's sexual activity. It's the story of when Jesus saved an adultress from being stoned to death by saying, "You who is without sin may cast the first stone." He dispersed the crowd that way, by pointing out they were all sinners. Exactly the opposite of why Michelle's crowd dispersed last night as they all rightly pronounced her the sinner. Jesus Fail, Michelle!

(13,616 posts)Well, do not be surprised if Fox news makes her a heroine.
Going right wing is the last refuge of the washed up. To think, she sang one of the best songs on the "dead man Walking" soundtrack. I wonder if she understands that she has made her bed with the sorts of people that wanted to put her at the end of a rope back in her heyday.
Go to Hell Michelle.

What the hell is it with people who just feel free that they can spew their vile hatred of others, just so they can make themselves feel justified by it. Its too bad they can't turn that hate on themselves, and leave the rest of us in peace.

(12,165 posts)I'm not certain I've actually heard of her. It sounds like a pretty generic punk name from the 80's, and I kinda-sorta think I've heard of her. Or maybe not.
It's kind of like someone who sees a beverage named CitriFizz in an article. It sounds like something in the sugary-drink genre that 7up, Sprite and Albertson's Citrus Sling occupy, so it's reasonable to think that you have heard of it.
Seriously - Citrus Sling. What does that even mean?
This is how I think of this weird homophobic singer. She's CitriFiz. Kinda sounds like a punk rocker you've heard of (zomg she has Shock in her name! Like electricity gone CRAZY!), but have you really?

(1,727 posts)at a music festival near Asheville, NC. She was playing music from her album that followed the Arkansas Traveler release. She asked for requests from the audience and when somebody suggested something from Arkansas Traveler. She went on a pretty nasty tirade about dirty hippies or something.
It was odd.
The crowd didn't really react. They were far better behaved than she was.
Haven't liked her much since then.
She has issues way beyond her current outburst.

To people who keep asking me to comment on Michelle Shocked's virulent onstage attack on gay people, here it is:
Well, that's too bad. As a performer with 45 years of shows behind me, I've had walk-outs when I sang about interracial couples, and when I sang about AIDS, and walkouts more recently when I sang about gay marriage. I am the first to argue that I have a right to sing and speak about those things on stage, just as the audience has the right to walk out, object to the management, and ask for their money back if they feel deceived.
Our country is in large part founded on the concept of free speech - the right to speak your mind politically and socially. But there is a huge difference between "Free speech" and "Hate speech." It is sad when a talented person chooses to use that talent in the service of their own misplaced rage, and their disappointment in their own life.
I often wonder if people like this die and meet God, who will smack them upside the head and say "Did I really LOOK like I needed your help?!"
And isn't it odd to see someone who was so woman-identified turn a 360 degree like this?
Then again, 'Hell hath no fury...'"
