China and US hail 'shared interests'

Xi Jinping has called for strong ties with the US, in the first high-level meeting between the two sides since he was confirmed as China's president.

His comments came in talks with Jack Lew, who is in Beijing on his first overseas trip as US Treasury Secretary.

The two countries should approach the relationship "from a strategic and long-term perspective", Mr Xi said.

Mr Lew said the two countries should "work together to reduce barriers to trade and investment".

China and the United States are such massive inter-dependent global forces that working together is the best way forward, and the best strategy to escape the global downturn. Look at statistics on U.S. direct investment in China. The figures are quite impressive and are proof of how important China is becoming for the U.S. However, if trade barriers are reduced and investment continues to grow, China should actively work on trade fairness, labour conditions and the elimination of human rights abuses.
