Megaupload founder refused bail in New Zealand

(Reuters) - A New Zealand court refused an appeal by the founder of online file-sharing site Megaupload.com to be freed on bail, Friday, agreeing with prosecutors there was a risk he would attempt to flee before an extradition hearing.

Kim Dotcom, a German national also known as Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Vestor, was returned to custody until February 22 ahead of a hearing on an extradition application by the United States.

The High Court in Auckland said the lower court judge was right to rule there was a significant risk Dotcom, who had passports and bank accounts in three names, might try to flee the country.

There was nothing to tie Dotcom to New Zealand except his motivation to fight the charges and get his funds, Justice Raynor Asher said.

Yet you post a few movies, or even just HOST them as in Kim Dotcom's case, you could face a very harsh prison term.

If there is anything at all that people should be going to jail for, it's the massive amounts of aggressive hate(as in, intended to rile people up and to commit violent acts against certain groups) speech that seems to be on YouTube these days.

What in the hell is wrong with this fucking picture?

who has been talking about this - and how unfair this guy is being treated - it's like he's automatically guilty and now has to prove himself innocent. that's not how it's supposed to work.

he has a good chance of winning his court case though IMO for this exact reason - his site was taken down before he even got a trial. Just like the Napster/Metallica debacle from years back - I hope this blows up in the government's face. wayyyyyy more people use redbox or netflix than download movies from megaupload. The excess greed of the MPAA will be their downfall. And ex-Dem Chris Dodd now heads the MPAA!

those in power get to play by a whole different set of rules - this must change.
