MSNBC announcing that Komen is reversing itself.
That didn't take long.

(8,747 posts)We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives.
The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.
Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.

(1 post)Thank you for providing a sensational topic here. A while ago, I came across an article connected with this issue. It was entitled: "Susan Komen attempts to deflect heat from Planned Parenthood decision". Susan G. Komen for the Cure has contributed much in the battle against breast and cervical cancer, but the company's recent decision to pull its financing of Planned Parenthood has attracted critical fire. Komen CEO Nancy Brinker is attempting to gloss over the truth that the business is pulling financing for 16 of 19 Prepared Parenthood clinics by exclaiming that the media's depiction of events is a gross mischaracterization. This is really frustrating and a bit disappointing. Oh well, I hope that investigation will lead to a quick resolution of the problem of Susan G. Komen withholding money that was once given without reservation.

I won't be donating until there's a total change in top management, though.
So, with all the extra money raised, this is a large jump in funding for Planned Parenthood!

(382 posts)SGKF's attack on Planned Parenthood, and all the women they serve, brought to light the nearly $12 million dollars they stopped giving to universities and other organizations using stem cells in their cancer research.
The fact that SGKF also spends donated money to sue other fund raising organizations using "for the cure" in their name or advertising is repugnant.
I hope people will find worthy organizations to send their money to and drop SGKF from their charity lists.

(326 posts)They couched their decision and changes in a way that would still stop them from making the grants . . . and this time they will do it quietly so no one knows. They change their mission and policy statements to suit their current agenda which is anti choice and anti embryonic stem cell research. http://www.care2.com/causes/susan-g-komen-foundation-also-stops-funding-embryonic-stem-cell-research.html I still will not donate to them. They are a marketing company now making companies who do things in pink rich .

(28,158 posts)NEW YORK In a reversal of Susan G. Komen For the Cure's funding cuts to Planned Parenthood, the founder and CEO of the nation's largest breast-cancer advocacy agency said Friday that the group would amend the criteria that sparked a firestorm.
"We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligiblity to appy for future grants," Nancy G. Brinker, the agency's ambassador, said in a statement.
"We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives."
Brinker's statement reiterated that Komen's original decision was not "done for political reasons, or specifically to penalize Planned Parenthood."

(1,999 posts)They aren't promising future funding. They always planned on honoring existing grants which were most likely already paid out. They're saying PP can apply for future grants but no guarantee they will be awarded them.
We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.
This reads to me as damage control and trying to get control of the message while they figure out how to deny any future grants without causing a furor. I don't think they'll be able to do so but I think they're trying to buy themselves some time.

(115,677 posts)Only "existing grants" will be funded, and it depends on how they interpret investigations.
The group will amend its new criteria to ensure that disqualifying investigations must be "criminal and conclusive" in nature, the statement said. Komen officials had originally said they cut funding to Planned Parenthood because the group is the subject of a Republican-led federal investigation fostered by anti-abortion advocates.
