Report: George W. Bush has most expenses among former presidents for 2012
Source: AP
Being the leader of the free world is an expensive proposition. And the costs dont stop once you leave the White House.
The government spent nearly $3.7 million on former presidents in 2012, according to an analysis released by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. That covers a pension, compensation and benefits for office staffers, and other costs.
The costliest former president? George W. Bush, who clocked in last year at just more than $1.3 million.

George Bushs secret Cayman vacation
Don't tell anyone! The former president just gave a speech at Romney's favorite parking place for offshore cash
By Andrew Leonard
George W. Bush gave the keynote address at an investment conference in the Cayman Islands on Thursday night. But we dont know what he said, reports NBC News, because Bushs own team required a complete blackout on any details about the speech.
The keynote speech by the former president was totally closed to all journalists, and conference organizers were banned from discussing any aspect of it even in general terms, spokesman Dan Kneipp said.
One would assume that as a former president who evidently does not aspire to do anything socially useful for the rest of his life, George Bush doesnt particularly care about how awful the optics of his visit to one of the worlds largest offshore financial centers look. Lets give him points for consistency: Bush devoted his presidency to lowering taxes on the rich and easing the regulatory burden on corporations. Four years after leaving his country in a state of complete ruin, hes busying himself giving a speech in one of the worlds most popular destinations for avoiding taxes and financial oversight. Theres a stark, savage purity to his commitment that cant be denied. George Bush is a true believer, a dedicated servant of the 1 percent.

(9,350 posts)There is no reason the federal government should be paying for the travel, postage, and office space for former Presidents. All the former Presidents should get a pension and Secret Service protection, but they should have to pay for everything else.
