Idaho boy detained after list, weapons found

Source: Idaho Statesman

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — An eastern Idaho junior high school student who police say compiled a list of students and police officers he planned to kill and gathered weapons for that purpose has been taken into custody.

Rigby Police Chief Keith Hammon said the boy's parents called police Monday evening when they found the list on an electronic tablet.

"It wasn't a huge list," Hammon said. "All of the parents of the students whose names were on the list have been notified."

Names and how many students and police officers were on the list have not been released publicly. The name of the juvenile taken into custody was also not released. Hammon said police believe no one else was involved in planning the possible attack.

"It is unlawful to sell or give to any minor under the age of sixteen years any gunpowder, or any shells or fixed ammunition of any kind, except shells loaded for use in shotguns and for use in rifles of twenty-two (22) caliber or smaller, or any firearms of any description, without the written consent of the parents or guardian of such minor first had and obtained.

It is unlawful for any person under the age of eighteen years to possess or have in possession any weapon, unless he has the written permission of his parent or guardian to possess the weapon; or is accompanied by his parent or guardian while he has the weapon in his possession. "

It's the parents legal responsibility ... in this case ...

As far as safe storage laws? ... didn't find anything under Idaho law ... I do know that all hunter safety courses teach safe storage, but this young man, obviously, hasn't taken such a course and I'm just guessing that he may have procured these weapons without his parents knowledge ....

Clearly this is a child and these parents took the correct action turning him in as they are legally responsible for his action ...

I didn't read all the gun laws in Idaho, but I did note that guns are also illegal on school grounds ...

Since we, as a nation, can't seem prosecute criminal actions by bankers, corporations, or politicians effectively enough to protect this country ... the price fixing of oil, precious metals, or the near bankrupting of our economy ... not to mention the mass slaughter of innocents ... I have little hope that stooges in Washington will risk even one vote by questioning any gun law ... they aren't paid to do that ... They're owned by the NRA, Jamie Dimon, etc., ....

We, in the final analysis, get what the little boy stepped in ...

If it "wasn't a huge list", then no bigs. At least the guns are safe now.

I don't own any guns, but I know some people who do. I hardly consider them nuts.

How precisely did you infer "anyone who owns a gun is a gun nut" from the specific "gun nut"? Seems about as absurd to be accused of calling all Christians wacked-out after referring specifically to fundies....

I believes yours is the logical fallacy known as the Weak Inference.
