Washington man killed in shootout after standoff
| March 28, 2013 | Updated: March 28, 2013 3:52pm

HOQUIAM, Wash. (AP) A 20-hour standoff between police in a Washington coastal town and a man who wounded an officer trying to arrest him on a warrant ended Thursday when the suspect died in a gunbattle with a SWAT team as his house went up in flames.

The armed man had a gas mask and a ballistic helmet, indicating he had prepared for a confrontation, Hoquiam Sgt. Brian Dayton said.

The question is why.

"We have no idea what made the guy take it to such an extreme level," Dayton said. "No reason as to why it escalated."

The 49-year-old man and his 53-year-old wife, whose names were not released, were wanted on arrest warrants out of Sacramento, Calif., for fraud, Dayton said.

1. Here's an idea:

"We have no idea what made the guy take it to such an extreme level," Dayton said. "No reason as to why it escalated."

Perhaps he listened too much to "gumment gonna take my guns" radio?

2. Volume

If he was listening to "gumment gonna take my guns" radio he would need the volume to be up loud as the gas mask and ballistic helmet probably knocks down the db's. . .

3. Couple things...

Wanted for fraud, and were prepared for a siege.

Anti-government nutcases like the "sovereign citizens."

4. The article from the Chronicle

doesn't say outright, but if I were a betting man, I'd wager he was a sovereign citizen, or at the very least, extremely sympathetic to their beliefs and general worldview.
