I watched it from my office window near the university. We used to eat lunch there -- had good hamburgers.

Bogie and Bacall's first flick. With Edward G. Robinson as gangster Johnny Rocko. Plus, Claire Trevor and Lionel Barrymore in great supporting roles.

Good flick.

Watch it... Ya hear! Nya!

It's a bit stagey, as it did come from Broadway, but that was common in those days.

Every role in "Key Largo" was acted professionally. Bacall was about 24 years old.

I also love Bogie and Bacall in their first film, "To Have and Have Not", where 20 year old Betty sweeps Bogie off his feet. You can even watch her do it. Here:

You know how to whistle, don't you Steve?

A big square, open in the center - with fire in the front and the back. And no wind today, so I doubt it was a hot cinder blowing to the other section.

My friends and I stumbled upon it by accident.

We had flown into Vegas and boarded a shuttle bus with a large group of people. As each person got on, the bus driver asked for the name of the hotel that they wanted to be taken to. "Summer Strip Inn," we replied.

It had been a long, crappy flight and my friends and I were all tired and hungry. We were looking forward to get to our room, eat some food and drink some beers.

We could see the excitement in the faces of those around us as the bus pulled up to their destinations. They bounded off the bus, luggage in hand, eager to embark upon their vacations.

Person after person left the shuttle as it made its route, and after nearly an hour, we were the only ones left on the bus.

The bus driver asked us again, "Which hotel are you going to?"

"The Summer Strip Inn."

"The Summer Strip Inn? That got torn down a few months ago."

SonuvaBITCH! Why didn't you tell us that when we got on?

Our hotel was a parking lot.

The shuttle driver pointed to a building and said, "That's the visitor information center," and then drove off.

We made our way to the visitor information center and explained our predicament to the woman behind the counter. She suggested the Key Largo; it was nearby and she offered to call them so we could make reservations.

The hotel was a couple of blocks away. "Should I call a cab?" asked the woman behind the counter.

I was tired, hungry, and royally pissed off. There was no way that I was willing to wait around anymore.

"No thanks. We'll walk."

(When one is without a vehicle in Vegas, what becomes readily apparent is just how far things are apart from each other, particularly when one is dragging luggage along.)

We finally arrived, checked in at the desk, and went to our room.

The room had a tiki bar. Perfect. Right across the street was a Mexican restaurant called Cozymel's, where we had a fantastic meal and margaritas. In the morning, we went down to the Key Largo lounge and had our complimentary Bloody Marys.

It turned out to be exactly what we wanted.

We stayed there a couple times after that. It's a little sad to know that it's finally gone.
