A prominent Utah gun lobbyist fell victim to a robbery earlier this week when his AR-15 was stolen from his vehicle, the Salt Lake City Tribune reported.
Clark Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, said his car was locked and parked outside his home on Wednesday, with his weapon secured in a case in the backseat. By Thursday morning, the AR-15 was nowhere to be found. Investigators still have no leads on the missing weapon.

(2,479 posts)Buying a gun makes for just another easy thing for the burglar to steal. Same thing here.
It's funny how many people don't understand that a $1200 thing (anything, laptop, whatever) might be something a thief would break a window for and steal.

Oh for God's sake! He left the gun on the back seat, in his car, which was parked outside, overnight?!
Yup, responsible gun ownership strikes again.

(2,140 posts)First off I have to wonder just HOW a supposedly responsible adult would leave a military grade weapon,if not a machine gun laying,in open sight,on the back seat of a car,EVEN if the car is locked and EVEN if it's in a case.
Secondly, being a cynic and considering that as a gun lobbyist/gun NUT,would this guy have SOLD that rifle to someone who couldn't legally buy one, then gin up a theft tale to cover his own ass?

(5,763 posts). . . does he always do stupid things like this? Or does he always do corrupt things like that? If he does both, he'll get caught doing something sooner or later.
It sounds like a hard mistake to make. AR-15 isn't what you take out to thwart a carjacking. Forgetting it overnight is like forgetting you're driving with a gold bar in your back seat. I'm certain the police probably know this, too, however.

(2,140 posts)I really don't mean to sound facetious,though I suspect it's unavoidable.
I think the fact that this guy is a GUN lobbyist,on its own, strongly suggests the answer to both questions is a very loud yes.
Perhaps not stupid and corrupt things like THIS,but stupid and corrupt things?Oh hell yes!

(1,231 posts)If we make it very difficult to get guns and it reduces the number of guns manufactured and/or sold there will be fewer guns coming into the possession of criminals. Short of a total ban, we need to at least get some major speed bumps into the system to slow the production and sale of guns.

Criminals don't usually buy crap guns on the street but they sure do like to steal them.

(7,672 posts)But the NRA and other gun nuts can continue to arm criminals at no charge to the criminal.
Yes, if a crime is committed with this gun, this "man" needs to be charged.
Right now, he just needs a few blows to the head. MIGHT get something working.

(5,861 posts)Especially not a gun.
Experienced thieves always pick out the item before smashing the window as a rule, because they want to minimize the window in which they can be spotted. They can't be on the lookout if they have their nose in a car rummaging around. They rather gamble on not knowing what is in the parcel and that it might be worthless than to get caught. If they can't see anything, they won't break it.
Just some general advice.

(34,825 posts)what kind of stupid mutherfucker leaves a rifle lying exposed in the backseat of his car?!

(10,303 posts)As for leaving stuff lying around in the car for fear of inviting a break in??? Just get some kids and eat too much fast food via drive-through windows. Inevitably your vehicle will look like a trashcan inside, and someone wanting to steal something from inside will definitely be turned off. Of course the same can be said of having a perfectly clean interior. But that's off topic.
The guy leaving his gun around should be subject to what his guns should have been subject to. A little bit locked up for a while. - that is of course just my opinion.

(3,384 posts)The problem is not gun 'control', it is GUNS.
The controlling of or the lack of controlling guns isn't what is killing people.
