Syria: UN Security Council 'to vote on resolution'
The UN Security Council is expected to vote later on Saturday on a resolution backing an Arab League peace plan for Syria, diplomats say.
The draft resolution calls on President Bashar al-Assad to hand power to a deputy to oversee a transition.
Russia has objected to earlier versions of the text and it is not clear how it will vote, or if it will abstain.
Meanwhile, reports from the Syrian city of Homs say more than 200 people have died in a government bombardment.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says Syrian forces were shelling the district of Khalidiyya and some buildings were set on fire. It said women and children were among the dead.

(23,369 posts)If there is a vote Saturday, unless there's been a major coup in Moscow, a veto is what will happen. Either way, the resolution as it stands does not endorse any outside military intervention; however, it is one-sided and immoral.
I think that Russia plays this back and forth business merely to throw off the warmongers and delay things. Hopefully that is true, and they are not caving in.

(23,338 posts)If it's vetoed, Assad will know he has a friend in Russia. If it passes, Assad will ignore it. Unless the U.N. is willing to commit combat forces to aid the rebels, Assad has free reign to crush them as he will.
It took NATO forces to get rid of Qaddafi, not toothless resolutions. The OP link hinted at "measures against President Assad's government". Do these measures include U.N. combat forces?
