Obama signs executive order freezing Iran

WASHINGTON | Mon Feb 6, 2012 10:39am EST

(Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama signed an executive order on Monday imposing new, stricter sanctions on Iran and its central bank, saying a broader asset freeze was necessary because Iranian banks were concealing transactions.

- snip -

The executive order, described as a further step in the U.S. effort to isolate Iran, prevents any assets deemed to be in U.S. control - including foreign branches of American banks - from being transferred, paid, exported or withdrawn.

No ahem... Here in the US we actually have politicians advocating striking Iran. Israel is doing it too. There are people in the US government talking seriously about attacking Iran. And considering our track record with Iran's neighbors, it's not exactly far fetched. So I'm not following why we're allowed to discuss taking out countries and still have nuclear weapons, but Iran is totally not allowed to.

I'd still rather Iran not have nuclear weapons, but I don't think we hold any moral high ground here. And to be perfectly honest, I can't blame them for wanting to develop nuclear weapons. Put yourself in their shoes.. Although, this is even assuming they truly are developing nuclear weapons. Aren't several groups saying they scraped most of their nuclear weapons programs? I know the US and some others are saying that's not the case, but it's difficult to take them at their word considering the whole Iraq fiasco.

They too have an axe to grind against Iran. Several times Saudi Arabia has been pressuring us to strike Iran militarily. As much as many people want to believe that Israel is the voice we listen to in the region, the Saudi's have a hell of a lot more sway with us due to their control of the largest oil fields in the world.

Really there is almost no military reason to strike Iran. Iran would not be stupid enough to get into a conflict with Israel with nuclear weapons. It would be suicide. A nuclear strike on the US would have similar results.

Iran wants respect and though this is an idiotic way of going about it they are aware that possessing nuclear weaponry puts you in a different place diplomatically.
