Mitt Romney: Susan G. Komen Was Right to Cut Planned Parenthood
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney thrust himself into the the Susan G. Komen controversy on Monday when he said in a radio interview that he agreed with Komen's decision to cut Planned Parenthood funding.
When Minnesota radio host Scott Hennen asked Romney whether Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the leading U.S. anti-breast cancer charity, should continue to give Planned Parenthood grants for cancer screenings and mammogram referrals, Romney said, "I don't think so."
"I also feel that the government should cut off funding to Planned Parenthood," the former Massachusetts governor added. "Look, the idea that we're subsidizing an institution which is providing abortion, in my view, is wrong. Planned Parenthood ought to stand on their own feet, and should not get government subsidy."
Romney could not have picked a worse time to associate himself with Susan G. Komen's anti-Planned Parenthood agenda. The cancer charity is roiling in a massive backlash for announcing it would defund Planned Parenthood because of a congressional investigation. Karen Handel, Komen's staunchly anti-abortion vice president for public policy, was the main force behind the decision and the attempt to disguise it as nonpolitical, The Huffington Post reported on Sunday. Komen leadership last week reversed its Planned Parenthood decision and apologized.

(70,489 posts)Mitt is on a suicide mission no doubt about. He might lose
40 states.
Anti Women, anti Hispanic, anti worker, he is an unlikable
rich guy who made his money firing people, and then parked his
funds in Swiss bank accounts.
Who is running his campaign anyway? Did he or she not see the
massive national backlash when Koman tried to pull off their anti
Planned Parenthood move.
KeepItReal
(7,769 posts)And he doesn't know it (or doesn't show it). The GOP has to run *somebody* this year, right? I still think GOP types with any common sense (oxymoronic... I know) are sitting this election out.
Plus, why would the powers that be want to change POTUS?
He has done so much compromising and deal making with forces on the right, why remove him? Reasonable, non-dogmatic Republicans would be happy with continued tax cuts, no crack down on wall street, no campaign finance reform, strong military response to terrorism (bipartisan), etc.
A Republican in the White House would again solidify Dem opposition against right wing policy moves. Plus that opposition would be more informed and demanding after studying the example of how GOP minorities in Congress got their way time and time again.
I think Obama's gonna roll over Romney, save some catastrophe.

(20,450 posts)the primaries, how will Mittens lie his way back to the political center for the General?
How will he be able to walk back his support for the draconian "personhood" law that was rejected even by a majority of Mississippi voters?
This guy is a horrible politician! HORRIBLE!!

(2,261 posts)I love how almost everything coming out of his mouth writes off another few million voters.
Lots of fiscally and politically conservative women, (and men) support Planned Parenthood. Many conservatives favor less government, and more private charities. Millions of voters think PP and private charitable giving to moderate social causes is a GOOD thing. It's a very common theme in conservative and independent voters. They want more private charitable giving, not less.
SGK reversed itself, after it figured out how stupid and self-destructive their actions had been in cutting off PP. Evidently, Romney can't figure it out!!
Great for him! His stupidity once again comes to the forefront. REALLY good for us!
Thank you Mitt!!!!

(7,604 posts)Given his history of flip-flopping on abortion issues, he's only going to convert those who want to be converted. Guess he thinks he gains more on the right than he loses in the middle. Maybe he's correct.
Interesting race shaping up in which conservative Republicans distrust Romney and progressive Democrats distrust Obama.

(3,596 posts)The public outcry against Komen organization over their decision to de-fund Planned Parenthood was swift and decisive. Aside from the kool-aid drinking fridge element that is the GOP core base, the rest of the country has a totally different view of the situation.
There is a general belief in reasonable and affordable access to health care, including for women's breast and other cancer screenings. This is the moral position. The fact Planned Parenthood, in a totally segregated portion of their operations, provides abortion services should not affect their eligibility for funding for general health services. As well all know only 3% of PP activities involved abortion-related services.
Secondly, while NO ONE is pro-abortion, the majority of Americans believe that abortion should be RARE but LEGAL. There is no interest in pushing these procedures to back allies.
But those like Mittens that would as soon outlaw abortion should be willing to pay much much more in taxes to pay for the pre-natal care, delivery and related costs, all post-natal care, child care, children's health insurance and care, pre-K, etc. services until the child is of legal age.
But the R's only interest is when the fetus is in the womb. Once it is born they have no interest in insuring it receives proper medical care, nutritious food, appropriate education, etc.

(575 posts)I can't remember their ever giving a legitimate reason. They're just against anything that lets women have any power. If they win this one, they'll take away our right to vote next, then our right to own property.

(1,412 posts)women's life and bodies, they aren't really pro-life, they are rabid anti-abortion.
The virulence of so many in the anti-choice movement is matched by a corresponding silence about the brutalization of girls and women around the world. In places like Congo, the monstrosities committed against girls and women defy imagination -
It's hypocritical, to say the least, for someone to fight tooth and nail against a woman's right to choose -- under the idea they are protecting "life" -- while standing by as "life" is slashed, mutilated, burned, raped, mangled, hacked, and strangled out of women and girls in every corner of the planet.

(23,338 posts)First, they drop support of Planned Parenthood, and lose masses of donors.
Then, they reverse the decision, maybe win back a few of the more trusting donors.
But, in reversing the decision, they pissed of the far right, losing even more donors.
It sucks to be SGK. They can't win.
But Planned Parenthood will probably come out ahead. For years to come.

(27,985 posts)It is yours, after all, you are entitled to cut it off if you wish, but if you do it in such a public venue, Mr. Romney, I promise it won't go well for you. Kind of like it hasn't been a good couple of days for the SGK people. It would be and is in both cases not only a spectacle, but also a boondoggle.
And throwing raw meat to your crazy ass, meat hungry fringe base doesn't work anymore now that the internet can disseminate information so rapidly that you can't please the fringe fundy whackadoos and still keep the voting middle. It can't be done.
It's time for truth telling about your opinions and let the cards fall where they may. After all, Mr. Romney, pretty much, you are going to win the opportunity, when the end of this endless primary season comes, to be the sacrificial lamb to the soon to be two term President and isn't that what you always wanted? Hmmmm?
