Pat Toomey: Background Checks Died Because GOP Didn't Want To Help Obama

Source: Huffington Post

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) revealed that some members of his party opposed expanding background checks for gun sales recently because they didn't want to "be seen helping the president."

Two weeks ago, only three Republican senators voted for the bipartisan background checks amendment sponsored by Toomey and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), despite overwhelming popular support for such a measure.

"In the end it didn’t pass because we're so politicized. There were some on my side who did not want to be seen helping the president do something he wanted to get done, just because the president wanted to do it,” Toomey admitted on Tuesday in an interview with Digital First Media editors in the offices of the Times Herald newspaper in Norristown, Pa.

The Times Herald noted that in "subsequent comments," Toomey "tried to walk that remark part-way back by noting he meant to say Republicans across the nation in general, not just those in the Senate."

To kill a snake you need to attack the head not the tail.
heritage and alec and it's funders need to be prosecuted for the conspiracy they are perpetrating. They are circumventing governance with in the confines of the statehouses and congress for financial gains.
If we are to do it through the voting booth we need to educate the masses about the head of the snake.

He is one of my Senators and I always considered him a rubber stamp Repub. The bill he co-wrote was not enough, but it was something, and he was attacked mercilessly by the RW in my State for doing this little bit. He went on talk show after talk show and all they did was accuse him of selling out-he couldn't even reason with them. He did stick his neck out and in doing so, has gained some respect from me.

6. From False Equivalency to Blaming Democrats for Republican Craziness

During the 2012 election, we saw the media bending over backwards to give Republicans cover by portraying a false equivalency between Republicans and Democrats. For example, even when they reported on a Romney lie, there was always an obligatory effort to suggest that the Obama campaign also lied on the same issue such as the coverage of Medicare and the comparison between Ryan's voucher care versus the savings in Medicare that Ryan himself has included in his budget.

Now, the new media talking point appears to be to blame Democrats for the craziness of Republicans. For example, why can't Democrats show enough leadership to convince Republicans to vote in their constituent's interests. Look at Maureen Dowd's essay that blamed President Obama for Republican instransience saying that President Obama must bear the blame for failing to "lead" Republicans on an issue that has 90 percent support? Really?

It is not like Republicans are a bunch of kids with aspergers who needs accomodations for their lack of social skills. When a politician, any politician, decides to ignore the needs of his or her constituents they need to own it. Can you imagine during the Reagan era if Democrats decided to ignore public opinion and blaming Reagan for failing to "lead"?

The bottom line is that unless Republicans are held accountable for their own actions, nothing will change. Allowing the media to give them cover by blaming Democrats for their intransience simply gives them a free pass.

She reasons that it his inability to lead is responsible for the Republican obstructionism. I have discounted her ramblings for a number of years.
