.. Gunman opened fire on police with AK47 and was shot by police during a routine traffic stop
Source: Daily Mail
Authorities released terrifying footage of an armed madman shooting up a patrol car in Middlefield, Ohio, turning a routine traffic stop into a combat zone.
Local police told reporters on Friday that they still have no clue why James Gilkerson fired 37 shots at two officers using an AK-47 style assault rifle after the officers pulled him over on March 10, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
He got of the vehicle, intending to kill my officers. We don't know why he did it, said Middlefield Police Chief Arnold Stanko.

But, hey, why ban AK-47?

AK47 - favored by cowards

(2,975 posts)but I think to lump any and all that enjoy the utility and durability of the AK-47 as cowards is a bit cheap. Not to say I'm defending anyone that would take it and shoot up the cops (or honestly, do anything but kill paper and cuddle it and clean it, or as utility in a combat zone) in an attempt at suicide by cop, but lets try and remember there are collectors out here and enthusiasts that would be colored 'cowards' by your statement.

For your critics. Guns by and large have not a thing to do with wars and the morality of them(to me the wars since I've been born have wrong and wastes), for the most part they are tools and used for recreational pursuits.
I have only been armed once in my life for self defense. It lasted three or four days until I could get my family moved out. My neighbor a drunk arrested many times for violence(including an assault on a female neighbor) started carrying a .357(legal in AZ) and menacing me.
I had a 12ga with goose shot at the door except when it was on the floor next to the bed at night.
Neither weapon was used in war, glorified or not, rightfully or not. There's all sorts of books and museums built to the glory of war - where their dunder at that?

(11,495 posts)The right wing extremists have been hearing from the likes of congress, the NRA, and right wing smear machine, Beck, Limbaugh, etc., about how the president Obama and the "liberals" are going to take away their guns and they are reacting. You can't stir up a hornets nest and not expect trouble. The right wing crazy base are the kind of people that are easily swayed, they are gullible enough to believe all the BS they hear and "think" they have to "defend" their rights, even though those rights have not been taken from them, they only "think" they have because of what they hear from the hate mongers who have been spreading this crap since president Obama got elected the first time, now after he won a second term, things are getting worse.
Not having strongly enforced background checks should be a no brainer, but politicians are bought and paid for by the likes of the NRA, and we all see what that has done for "sane" gun laws.

(47,465 posts)the TV was on and while the enormity of the carnage was as yet to be revealed, Adam Lanza's suicide was known.
And one of my friends commented on how first they mass shoot and then kill themselves, and added: why not kill yourself first?
Rhetoric, of course, and still bothersome.

(25,111 posts)apparently this guy was pissed. Seems like he meant to hurt to kill the officers. Knowing the insane NRA they may use this footage for training.
And I bet this guy was a responsible gun owner.

(10,857 posts)... I took the plunge into some gun porn that preexisted the incident and also looked into the FEG AMD-65, which the police press release seems to finger.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_65
It is indeed a variant of the AKM so for once the press can actually get away with using the shorthand "AK-47" and not have the rest of their reporting called into question for shoddy work.
Most of the discussion around this gun seemed to revolve around several regulatory compliance issues; apparently the guns can only be sold in the US with a certain amount of American-made parts, which seem to be considered sub-standard, and a barrel extension may also be mandatory. Some sort of fiddling with the clips may also have to be done to make them legal. I also got some indication that some of the guns may have shipped either in an illegal configuration or with a few pieces missing, along with an American-made parts catalog that someone could happily toss aside while rebuilding the gun with better, non-American parts.
One poster in a message board observed that only 30-round clips and smaller seemed reliable, and that 40-round clips and larger (there are clips larger than that?!?) tended to fail. The shooter in this video appeared to me to stay semi-auto the whole time, and to have trouble around shot 33; the clip may have begun to fail at that point, though it also appears the shooter was wounded in at least one arm or hand about that time, too.
The only reason I'm offering this is to point out that there are several potential avenues of regulatory failure at work here, even if the shooter acquired and assembled his weapon according to the law.
Not well-regulated is a helluva good position to start from in any American gun debate.
