Last Cleveland kidnapping victim out of hospital
Source: AP/Salon
CLEVELAND (AP) The third woman kept in captivity for a decade in a Cleveland house has been released from the hospital and is asking for her privacy.
MetroHealth Medical Center spokeswoman Phyllis Marino says Michelle Knight left the hospital Friday afternoon but declined to comment further on Knights condition or where she was going. Earlier Friday, Knight said in a statement she is in good spirits and grateful for the fund created to aid the victims.
A missing-person report on Knight filed one day after she disappeared in 2002 said without elaboration that she has a mental condition and often is confused about her surroundings.
Former Cleveland school bus driver Ariel Castro has been charged with rape and kidnapping for keeping Knight and two other women captive.

(5,163 posts)Don't know the mother's situation and if she will be available and able to care for her daughter.
A therapist was quoted on TV as saying that all three young women missed that decade of being mothered, and surely Michelle needs that after her most abusive treatment at the hands of Ariel Castro.
I do believe that the three helped boost one another during their ordeal.
Being alone in that environment would have been insufferable.

(53,661 posts)She had also been beaten before her disapperance and the family didn't press the police to keep looking for her, as if she was a runaway. The mother's BF was due to be charge with rape by Knight, but it was dropped when she was kidnapped.
The only person she wants to see is her twin brother, who also hates her mother, and is helping her to learn out to use the internet. Apparently she is the only one she wants near her. She is deaf in one ear and needs facial reconstruction surgery from the beatings by Castro.
This was posted on some DU threads today. I agree, the three women supported each other and likely loved the child that Berry had while there.

Maybe the mother has split from the boyfriend, maybe not.
Michelle has enough tragedy in her life without the baggage of a bad family life.
I understood that the girls communicated even though separated. there were "holes" in the doors for passing through food, etc. There would have also been human waste to deal with. - not sure how they managed bathroom use when locked up. Imagine it will all come out some day, gruesome story that it is.
I heard once that Gina and the young mother shared a room at least at some point. Then the child Jocelyn would have been there.
Incidentally, re talk of the child's swimming pool used for the birth of the baby - my niece had a planned home birth and used a child's swimming pool, perhaps with water in it, not sure, for her home birth. I believe my niece had a doula assist her. Perhaps Castro researched home births and learned of the use of these pools in that instance.

I hope she is able to heal. From everything that other kidnap victims have said, family support means everything in the ability to bounce back. Unfortunately, she seems to need the most help and is the one who is least likely to get it.

(37,748 posts)I can't imagine what thought processes compelled the Castro to do this, I can't imagine how the women lived through it, and I certainly can't imagine what the young women want from the world in the here and now (e.i., if they simply want to be left completely alone, or go to the other side of the spectrum and surround themselves with family, or something in-between).
A thoroughly incomprehensible scenario to me from beginning to end in that I simply am unable to wrap my brain around these abuses or their consequences. Lost childhoods, years of abuse and violence, etc.
I just cannot understand any of it.
I can only pray and hope the victims receive warmth, support, comfort, and love from those they need it from.
