Poll: Majority In Arizona Backs Gay Marriage

Source: TPM

Far more Arizonans support same-sex marriage than oppose it, according to the latest Rocky Mountain Poll released Tuesday.

The poll showed that 55 percent of Arizona voters favor the idea of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally, while just 35 percent said they are opposed.

Large majorities of women, Hispanics and voters under the age of 55 support same-sex nuptials. A plurality of voters over the age of 54 — 46 percent — supports gay marriage, while 40 percent of the group is opposed.

In 2008, Arizona voters easily passed a constitutional amendment that provided legal recognition only to heterosexual marriages.

6. It is not a red blue issue in AZ.

It is a personal liberty issue. I live a few blocks from ASU, the largest university in the U.S., and it is full of libertarian student groups who favor gay marriage. Old line gopers here oppose gay marriage but they are quickly leaving the scene. The ASU young republicans favor gay marriage and on 4/20 had a joint rolling contest on campus. Campus police ignored it.

4. It would be nice if Arizona was the first Sunbelt State to pass Marriage Equality.

I spent three glorious years of my childhood in Arizona. Stunningly beautiful place that holds a lot of good memories for me.

I hate that it has become an outpost of right-wing hatred and douchebaggery.

I hope predictions of a turn towards Blue are accurate.

5. As with Colorado, a ban on gay marriage is now part of the state's constitution

Making it that much harder to institute gay marriage in the state. The constitution has to be amended first.

In AZ the Constitution can be amended by citizen initiative. Those are on the ballot every election. I Don't know if any group is trying to do that.
