Julian Bond, Former NAACP Chair: Tea Party Is 'Taliban Wing Of American Politics'
Source: Huffington Post
Former NAACP Chairman Julian Bond said Tuesday that it was "entirely legitimate" for the Internal Revenue Service to target conservative groups for increased scrutiny, calling the tea party the "Taliban wing of American politics."
"I think it's entirely legitimate to look at the tea party," Bond said during an interview with MSNBC's Thomas Roberts. "Here are a group of people who are admittedly racist, who are overtly political, who've tried as best as they can to harm President Obama in every way."
In 2004, the civil rights group was audited by the IRS in a move Bond criticized at the time as "an attempt to silence the NAACP."
"They are saying if you criticize the president we are going to take your tax exemption away from you," he said in 2004. "It's pretty obvious that the complainant was someone who doesn't believe George Bush should be criticized, and it's obvious of their response that the IRS believes this, too."
During the Tuesday interview, Bond denied that there was any parallel between the IRS' latest scandal and the NAACP audit.

(2,730 posts)miss Lerner issue an apology to the NAACP? When the 2012 Election was going on, The Republican Party had a confrontation with the Tea Party too. Lerner was appointed during the Bush Administration. The IRS does not apologize to anybody very often for targeting them and they do target people. How many times did they do it during the Bush Administration? She is the one did the apology in a conference with the News Media. They explain it as she let it slip. I wonder about that? This entire targeting supposedly occurred around 2010, when a Bush appointee was still in charge. Now you have an acting commissioner under the Obama Administration. How convenient would that be for the GOP and the Press? They can put the focus on Obama. Even the Benghazi emails looked trumped up and I wouldn't be surprise if the same is happening with the A.P. I don't see the Press as an agency reporting anything but manipulating what they report ever since Iraq. So I'm not so much in a rush to defend a group, that I see aligns themselves with the GOP and seems to be politically motivated themselves. At least some of the reporters seems to be. And since the Former IRS commissioner is no longer employed, maybe Miss Lerner should be dismissed. Since it also started under the former commissioner, maybe they should retro actively take any benefits he got from the IRS?
