Comcast shareholders meeting includes unhappy tea party folks ('Protesting' Comcast's MSNBC)

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

About a dozen tea party activists from the Philadelphia area gathered outside the Kimmel Center on Wednesday - site of Comcast Corp.'s annual shareholders' meeting - to protest the company's ownership of the liberal-leaning MSNBC 24-hour cable news channel.

Inside the meeting, shareholders peppered Comcast chief executive officer Brian Roberts about the company's decision to ban local gun-shop advertisements. There were also complaints about the Rev. Al Sharpton, host of PoliticsNation on MSNBC.

Tom Borelli, senior fellow with the tea party group FreedomWorks, said Comcast risked losing conservative cable subscribers because of MSNBC, a unit of NBCUniversal. "Conservatives can abandon your business," Borelli said.

Roberts, chairman of the 50-year-old company with more than $60 billion in annual revenue, said that Comcast outperformed other cable companies in the first quarter and that the cable industry supports a "diversity of voices."

Now why would Tearacists single out Rev. Al?

Hmm...

Oh, and FreedomWorks?

Just another astroturf faux protest.

How does that work? I've never heard of a town in which the cable company didn't hold a monopoly...they contract with the town to provide service. I suppose the could try AT&T Uverse or Dish. Good luck with that!

And they don't provide internet access. Uverse is just cable on your telephone line. Poor quality, worse internet.

Hervepa, you say that in Philadelphia you can "choose Verizon." For what? Choose Verizon over Comcast for cable TV? I've never heard of that. I'm not saying you're wrong, I've just never heard of municipality offering a choice...they all tend to contract with one provider. You either use the town's cable provider, or you choose Dish or Uverse. Of course, I could be wrong.

I've never heard of "competition" in small cities or towns. In a city like NY, there are so many customers and so many boroughs and neighborhoods, I can see that it might be feasible. But most towns put it up for bid, and one provider is awarded the contract. That's pretty standard.

The down side is that if you are constantly inundated with commercials and junk mail from the two companies.
The plus side is that if they raise the rate and you threaten to change, you can usually get them to lower it.
That worked for me a number of times with Comcast, then they got outrageous and would only lower it a little, so I switched.

almost exclusively because of his occasional criticism about Iran/Iraq and his recent gun-safety focus. That's good enough to make Joe a "liberal" in Tea-Party land.

Sure -- the TP is just a benign and non-political organization looking out for the welfare of TV viewers.
The fact that Fox Noise is ubiquitous across the nation - carried by all cable channels, including MSNBC - it is not a conservative, TP-supporting, opinionated, misleading, disinforming propaganda channel masquerading as news.

These are conservatives who are judgmental over news coverage? Let 'em bluff but I'm pretty confident you won't lose too many. They'll scan the channels back and forth until they settle on Lockup. It's not like these people have a Pilates class or a Tolstoy book club.

That's what I do with Faux Noise - I use the parental controls to block it so no one visiting my house can turn to that crap.

If they don't want to watch MSNBC, they can do the same. They don't need to prevent the rest of us from watching it.
