Internet celeb sought in New Jersey murder

HADDONFIELD, N.J. - May 16, 2013 (WPVI) -- A man known on the internet as "Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker" is now being sought for the murder of a man in New Jersey.

The suspect is identified as Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, a 34-year-old who is well known on Facebook and YouTube.

An arrest warrant has been issued for McGillvary in the homicide of Joseph Galfy, Jr. in Clark, New Jersey, WABC-TV in New York reported.

He was last seen at a light rail station in the Haddonfield, New Jersey area, said Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow. McGillvary is considered to be armed and dangerous.

15. I thought he only injured him, or didn't injure him, as he said the man got up and went for him.

He definitely didn't kill him, the man had to stand trial for hitting the utility driver with his car.

The witnesses didn't think he'd done anything wrong, and he wasn't held by the police. He seemed a bit high strung, and was cycling from one mood to the other.

But the guy that he assaulted in Fresno apologized for what he did to the utility worker and Kai wasn't held for assault. It was strange to me that the police let him go, after he said he had scars on his hand from attacking another man earlier with the hatchet. Was allowed to go on his way that time.

To hit someone with a hatchet in the head is usually lethal, so why no one talked to him about that was weird. And this guy he's being charged with killing, a 73 year old attorney? Really?

I don't understand how he got all the way to NJ, there was a lot going on in his life that we'll never know, probably. Traveling across country in the way that he was, could be considered to be reckless. Going into a stranger's house for the night is also dangerous. JMHO.

I hope this isn't true.

One of the comments on that abc site quotes Kai's facebook status with an account of how the victim had raped him. Can anyone who has a Facebook account confirm that this is actually on Kai's facebook page? I don't know what his facebook account is, and don't do facebook anyway, but I am curious as to whether this is actually a claim Kai is making.

Yes that looks very legitimate. He is claiming to have been raped. Sad that he probably ruined any chance he had at a future by going all Maxwell's silver hammer on the guy, but I can see, in his situation, how going to the authorities probably wasn't an acceptable option for him. Bummer all the way around. If this is indeed what happened, I wish him well.

10. I'm a bit torn

He did seem slightly "off" in the original interview. When he was talking about hitting the guy with the hatchet he really didn't seem to make the mental connections that he could have killed him. Sort of like a young kid that really doesn't empathize with animals. It struck me back then and I am sad it came to this. His basic philosophy of life was relaxed but I think he has an edge to his personality or a temper.

If I'm not mistaken he said back then that he had been raped in the past as an explanation as to why he carried the hatchet. Maybe it was as simple as he had promised himself he would never let it happen again and was on automatic pilot following his preconceived escape/revenge plan? He obviously interacts with strangers all the time and doesn't seem to have many detractors so I tend to believe some type of assault happened. But the victim was 73 years old, he could have called the cops on him rather than killing him.

I live in the tri-state area, if I see him I don't think I'll be letting him sleep on my couch.

As you note, the proper response to the claimed situation is to call the police and report a crime, and not take the law into one's own hands. This is not even claimed to be an act of self-defense, but one of retribution.

Nikki Shure You have been sexually assaulted. It depends, if you want the guy to pay, first, don't get rid of the come, let it dry on your face, Go to an ER indicate you have been sexually assaulted. If they don't have a procedure (they should swab it and YOU should indicate that some be put in a container for you and labeled by THEM and YOU save that labeled container for DNA). But according to the fb timeline, Ratliff didn't post his "suggestion" until Wednesday (if I'm reading things correctly).

I suspect Ratliff was making a reference to the incident which brought Caleb into the spotlight to begin with.

It's a good reminder about taking time to consider the potential consequences of off-the-cuff remarks, even if this particular one was made after the fact.

The guy has a history of using an ax as a weapon. I'd hate to be the one responsible for planting that seed, had it been done prior to the murder. Caleb's comment about liking Ratliff's idea would only have made it worse for him.

First memories: I was in a crib and "family" was fussin over me, but I kept getting told that I "had a demon". I would wake up screaming from night terrors and "family" would get sexual with me, then blame me for being all wound up. I was told by a woman self-declared "mother" that the woman self-declared "grandma" touched me as a baby and imparted a "demon" into me. events later in life caused me to think it's the other way around. I've already been thrown away by them, they refuse to talk to me about when I was a child, saying that "guilt, shame and blame have no place in [their] life, because jesus forgives [them]" I would get locked in a room for 20 hours a day with a little port-a-potty camp toilet in the corner of the room and when I'd make any noise at all I'd get hit with little broom handles and wooden spoons, then after that my mouth was filled with hot pepper and soap for yelling "fuck you" at the top of my lungs from the little cage I was kept in (the beatings didn't silence me). what did silence me was when they'd both take turns picking me up and putting me in cold showers, no heat at all. I'd be naked and shivering, only two years old, and the woman who kept everyone else out of my life out of shame would be the only one there to hold me. when I was young I got caught lighting a sleeping bag on fire, and drinking a bottle of benadryl, but when they took me into the hospital and the doctors shoved a tube down my throat without anesthetic the doctors just sent me back to the house with them. the two "parents" would use me to get digs at each other, they'd fuck all the time and cage me up and I could hear them and it seemed to be all that love *was* between them. they'd bring me to church and I'd spit on the floor and take the "gifts" from the table so I could finally eat something, I got sent to bed without food all the time. when I was two years old I painted the walls in shit and that was the only chance I got to express creativity in that environment. the two "parents" would completely trash each other in front of the three kids, and because there was one kid who wasn't from their "marriage", the man, he'd take toys from him and give them to me. so that kid learned to hate me from a young age. the other kid learned to hate me when I got a knife out from the kitchen drawer and tried carving a hole in the wall to escape into a tunnel I wanted to build into the ground... I seen a look in his eyes and it was exactly like he gave the self-declared "mother" when she'd beat the kids and me. so I turned to him with the knife and the other kid came running in and tackled me. of course, him and I both got beat for that. I got sent to psychiatric hospitals after that, and all the doctors took her side because she was so eloquent and I was just 4. I couldn't relate in their big words about all the pain I would feel when she brought out "mr. broom" and "mr. spoon" and THEY got angry. she would always blame the objects she hit me with instead of herself, and whenever I wanted to go out and be active at the playground the two "parents" would say, 'no, jesus might come tonight'. I was fuckin terrified of jesus when I was young, he seemed so evil but they kept sayin he was loving and pure and holy and only he could get me into 'heaven'. I kept wanting to die so bad so I could be in 'heaven'. I read the bible passage where there was a prodigal son and I kept demanding "my inheritance" so I could just leave. They took away everyone else from my life and locked me in a cage so that I would love them, it was fucked up. I still remember waking up from a horrorful dream and screaming, the woman would stand in the doorway and yell "shut the fuck up! stop yelling! STOP FUCKIN YELLING!" and then she picked me up and threw me in the shower and turned it on full cold. I had a phobia of showers for a long time after that. They split up when I was 4, and I remember the woman standing at the top of a stairwell yelling "Either he goes to the hospital and gets help, or I'm leaving you". She never mentioned that she had found another man 6 months before, it was all my fault... the man picked me up and went to go live with his mother, then gave me a cold shower when we got there for being upset. his mother told him to never do that again.

1) Someone (unsubstantiated) said they talked to a local police official and they said the lawyer had internet cameras all through the house, so the police may have a very good idea of what happened there.
