Suspect in NY bias shooting is charged with murder

Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) — The man who police say hurled homophobic slurs at a gay man on a Manhattan street before firing a single fatal shot to his head has been charged with murder as a hate crime.

Elliot Morales appeared Sunday in Manhattan Criminal Court. He also was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

Authorities say Morales used a revolver to kill 32-year-old Mark Carson early Saturday as he walked with a companion in Greenwich (GREN’-ich) Village.

Ben Petok, a spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney, says no plea was recorded for Morales. He’s being held without bail. His next court appearance is Thursday.

Hurling homophobic slurs and shooting someone isn't 'bias'. 'Bias' is giving more airtime to conservative politicians or something. This was 'hate'. I'd expect better from Salon.

I would hope that they'd use the term 'hate crime.'

not Salon. AP reports are available on the right hand side of the main page, about three quarters of a way down the page

You often see AP headlines rewritten, and this one is calling out for it.

and encourage her to implement the change you want. Hopefully, there are no contractual obligations between Salon and the AP necessitating Salon to run what ever headlines the AP has.

If you look up "bias attack" on a search engine (and I tried Bing too, in case Google had seen I had clicked a link to a New York story and had somehow got it into its head that I would only be interested in New York stories), just about all the hits come from NY (including Long Island) or New Jersey. But it goes back several years - there's a Sikh cab driver attacked after 9/11 described as a 'bias attack'. NYPD started a "Bias Incident Investigating Unit" back in 1980. So I guess it's a bit of regional jargon. It still smacks of a euphemism to me, but it seems ot have been established there a long time ago.

in Massachusetts that worked it's way into becoming an AP story. The AP reporter pretty much re-worded a Boston Globe article but, rephrased it in such a way that caused me great discomfort. I phoned a friend that's a columnist at the Boston Globe to complain about it. He told he would see what he could do but, when he looked at the article and saw it was from the AP, he said, "there's nothing I can do about an AP article, we have to run it the way they wire it out, including the headline." My friend then went into a rant about the AP which really surprised me. Scot, my friend, told me the AP has stringers in every City/town that re-write articles appearing in the local media, submit it to AP and the stringer then hopes the story goes big. So, this AP report about a bias murder, may in fact, be by some stringer who re-words articles he's lifting from a local MSM reporter

Elliot Morales: Chilling moment Greenwich Village gay hate killing suspect laughed and boasted about 'murder' minutes after attack

Elliot Morales, 33, was charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime, menacing and two counts of possession of a weapon in a Manhattan court on Sunday

Suspect was 'laughing on the ground' as police handcuffed him minutes after the shooting

Attack occurred around midnight on Saturday as 'anti-gay' remarks were made by passing group of men

Incident being treated as a 'hate crime' - the fourth in two weeks

The officers look none too pleased to have to deal with this maniac. This is the kind of stuff that law enforcement officers see everyday in their line of work. I wouldn't want to have to deal with this level of crazy, much less armed, insanity on a daily basis. He is the kind of guy the rest of us run away from. This is another picture of him under arrest:

NRA Lobbying & Financial Contributions Make It Easy For Criminals To Have Access To Guns
Laughing Monster: Sick boast in ‘gay slay’

WHAT’S SO FUNNY? Elliot Morales flashes a twisted smirk as cops arrest him following the deadly shooting.

How does someone with six prior arrests, including one for attempted murder in 1998 and others for criminal possession of a weapon have access to guns? How does someone who has served more than nine years in both city and state prisons have access to guns? Thank the NRA for their Lobbying and Political Campaign Contribution Efforts. That is their job and they do it very well.

The homophobic ex-con accused of “executing’’ a gay man in Greenwich Village laughed and boasted about the murder, prosecutors said yesterday.

“Yeah, I shot him in the head,” Elliot Morales, 33, sneered while “laughing on the ground” as cops were handcuffing him for fatally shooting Mark Carson, 32, early Saturday morning, according to prosecutors...
