Charlie Rose to Host a Show in Prime Time on PBS

Viewers can already wake up with Charlie Rose on “CBS This Morning,” and wind down their day with his late-night PBS newsmaker interview program. If that is not enough, Mr. Rose, who has been called “the hardest working man in television,” will soon be hosting a Friday night prime-time PBS show, as well.
The half-hour program, called “Charlie Rose Weekend,” will cull the best of his late-night program, which has been seen on PBS for two decades. It will also feature original interviews, and will touch on politics, science, business, culture, media and sports. It is scheduled to begin in July, PBS officials told executives of its member stations at the PBS annual meeting in Miami last week.
The new show, to be broadcast at 8:30 p.m. Fridays, will replace “Need to Know,” a news magazine that went through numerous anchors and format changes in its three years on the air.
In a statement, PBS said the new “Charlie Rose Weekend” would be a bridge between its Friday evening public affairs program, “Washington Week,” and its arts and culture programming, including the “PBS Arts Fall Festival.”

CHARLIE ROSE: You can make that argument and look at it. That’s not the point I was taking. The point I was making is it’s not dictated by with whoever the corporate ownership is. I promise you that — they are not dictating. They are not saying we want you to have more generals who are in favor of the war than you have generals who are in opposition to the war; that’s just not the way it works.
AMY GOODMAN: They don’t have to say that. They hire the people who will do just that.
CHARLIE ROSE: The argument I have with respect is Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, and Dan Rather — a whole range of people — are journalists who have paid their dues and they are very competent journalists (etc. etc. snip)
AMY GOODMAN: I could only say that during the Persian Gulf War what we saw on NBC and CBS, NBC owned by General Electric–at the time CBS was owned by Westinghouse — two of the major nuclear weapons manufacturers in the world — I don’t think it was any accident that what we saw on TV was a military hardware show.

Now if all Charlie Rose shows were like that, I'd be happy if PBS trashes its whole lineup and broadcasts Charlie Rose 24/7/365 (366 in leap years)
