Boy Scouts approve plan to accept openly gay boys as Scouts

Source: Associated Press

The Boy Scouts of America's National Council has voted to ease a long-standing ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted as Scouts.

Of the local Scout leaders voting at their annual meeting in Texas, more than 60 percent supported the proposal.

Under the proposal drafted by the Scouts' governing board, gay adults will remain barred from serving as Scout leaders.

and turn the BSA into a more accepting, reality-based organization while the bigoted fundiegelical parents can branch off into their own underground scouting orgs.

. . . but the organization's bigotry remains well intact. Since the policy against openly LGBT adult leaders/volunteers remains intact, what kind of message to you think that sends to young gay boys? Frankly, all the BSA has done with this move is to embrace the pathology model of homosexuality; they are "tolerating" openly gay boys because they don't want to be seen as intolerant of folks who are gay because 'they can't help it." As a gay man, and a former Boy Scout, I say thanks but no thanks.

I recall watching a documentary about 12 years ago on gays in Texas whose own families had rejected them because of their religious beliefs. It's actually quite monumental.

They will evolve. The writing was on the wall for their eventual demise as a broadly accepted social group. They chose to embrace change today. Change doesn't stop.

This one really activates their hatred button.

Since that's the only button they have, they may as well enjoy wallowing in it as usual.

He grew up in a small town in Wisconsin.

The troop knew he was gay and was also an excellent scout.

He was honored by Gov Walker a couple months ago, photo and all, tongue in cheek all the while.

Soon the contradiction will resolves between boys and adults as the boys become eagle scouts and eventually adults.

I'm an Eagle Scout and I am proud of this change even as I expect more.
