RAF Typhoon jets have been launched to investigate an incident involving a civilian aircraft within UK airspace, the Ministry of Defence has said.
A Pakistan International Airlines plane has been diverted from Manchester to Stansted Airport, a Manchester Airport spokesman said.
An Essex Police spokeswoman added: "An incident has occurred on an aircraft. Police and partners are responding."
The BBC understands that the plane has now landed in Stansted.

Two men have been arrested after RAF Typhoon jets were launched to escort a passenger plane travelling from Pakistan to the UK, police have said.
Officers boarded Pakistan International Airlines flight PK709, which had been due to land at Manchester, after it was diverted to Stansted Airport.
Two men, aged 30 and 41, are being held on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft, Essex Police said.
A PIA spokesman said all passengers on board were safe.

However, the Guardian understands that the pilot, concerned about a disruptive passenger who had started shouting, asked to divert to Stansted, London's third airport, as a precaution.
The pilot was then satisfied the incident had been resolved. However, the passenger is likely to be escorted off the plane at Stansted.

It is understood the incident is not being treated as a terrorist incident and that Essex police are not liaising with counter-terrorism officers.
