Nigerian parliament bans same-sex marriage

Nigerian lawmakers have approved a bill banning same-sex marriage, setting jail terms of up to 14 years for offenders.
The measure backed by the House of Representatives also makes it illegal to form gay groups or organisations.
The bill - which was adopted by the Senate in 2011 - is now expected to be sent to President Goodluck Jonathan to be signed into law.
It is already illegal to have gay sex in Nigeria, and homosexuals say they often suffer abuse.

(3,596 posts)These policies are the same ones of the American Republics that want to retain control of everything a person does. This is because the life-blood of the country is oil, oil, oil.
This is the same phenomena of the U.S. where we have elected officials that worship the energy companies, service them physically and otherwise just to get a vote.
I feel for the LGBT persons in this country. If we could eliminate our dependence on foreign oil we could tell them to screw themselves (figuratively of course).

(57 posts)In theory yes, but the tax man runs around collecting taxes from any business that looks like it is prosperous. And when its not direct taxing, it comes in form of bribes and fees you have to pay X govt worker to give your license to open your business or get an extension.
The country is no fiscal conservative paradise, but if you want social conservatism, they got u covered.
