Maine GOP sticks with Romney win for now

AUGUSTA — Maine's Republican Party says Mitt Romney's narrow win over Ron Paul in the state's presidential caucuses will stand for now, even as Republicans in one eastern county whose caucus was postponed due to bad weather are proceeding with a rescheduled vote.

State Party Chairman Charlie Webster said today that Saturday's caucus results won't be altered at least until the state committee takes up the matter at its March 10 meeting. In the meantime, Republicans in Washington County, where a snowstorm forced a postponement, will hold their caucuses Feb. 18.

Washington County GOP Chairman Chris Gardner said the county's results will be posted after they are counted.

"The fact of the matter is we're going to hold our vote, we're going to announce the results and the media can do its own math," said Gardner. "Regardless of who wins, those votes need to be counted and that's what we're doing."

There has been a lot of noise about not counting the Washington and part of Hancock Counties that haven't caucused yet.

The GOP Chair has "sort of" backed off on saying this is the final count. He's been getting a lot of heat about this. It's pretty messed up. And I love it.

So, are there potentially enough votes in this county to overturn the win decision? IIRC, he needs to pick another 200 or so...

2. It would be a major task to get the necessary votes but it's not out of the question

It all depends on how hard the Paul people work to get supporters to that caucus. This is a very red county and it's very conservative. Maybe the most conservative in the state. Paul can win it but it will take a good amount of effort.

3. Nearly 7,000 registered Republicans in Washington county - will Mitt organise an anti Paul ad blitz?

The results could change - if Paul can manage to tempt 200 more people out than Mitt on Saturday. The county has 7,000 registered Republicans out of 32,000 residents - so its possible!

Given the attention being given to it there may even be a very high turnout - and its a conservative pro Paul sort of place. Perhaps Mitt has a million dollar ad buy planned at all the local stores against Paul!

But the question is how did this all happen. The cancellation of the Washington caucus at the last minute due to 'bad weather' was strange. I gather the Girl Guides managed to hold a local event in the county on Saturday - but the snow was just too bad for those adult Republicans to caucus apparently!

5. In the defense of Washington County...

And I rarely, if ever, come to the defense of Republicans.

The forecast was nasty. And this was a county-wise caucus and the county is very large geographically. They had to postpone it with enough notice for those who had to travel a good distance. I can understand why they did this.

Maine Democrats have one caucus day for everyone. And each town has a "snow day" announced. There's a date by which all caucuses that are postponed must be held. I don't know if the GOP has the same rule.

That's as far as I'll go to defend them.

The head of washington county caucus is a Romney supporter, it was reported the same day. It's funny how they all leave that out as well as the fact that there was not nowhere near enough snow to cancel it esp. in Maine!

7. These Mainers might just be ornery enough to stick it to Romney

Especially since the state party tried to deprive them of their votes to call it for Romney.

9. Did it actually snow a lot or was there just a forecast of possible heavy snow? And if the latter,

has anything major in Maine ever gotten canceled before based just on the forecast of snow? Because it seems to me that people in Maine would be used to coping with snowstorms like this.

instead of a Dem in Lincoln County, I'd be *so* pissed off at their attempt to toss my vote that I'd make a point of showing up and voting for the opposition.

As someone posted above, hope their ornery enough to put Paul over the top.
