Lawmaker: If CNN can interview suspect in Benghazi attack, why can't FBI?

Source: CNN

A Republican lawmaker demanded Wednesday to know why investigators have not captured or killed any of the suspects in the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, pointing out that CNN was able to find a man who some say was the ringleader in the assault that left the ambassador and three other Americans dead.

Eight GOP lawmakers are asking that incoming FBI Director James Comey brief Congress within 30 days about the investigation. They say the administration's inquiry into the September 11, 2011, attacks in Libya has been "simply unacceptable," according to a draft letter obtained by CNN.

"One of the pertinent questions today is why we have not captured or killed the terrorist who committed these attacks?" Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told reporters. "News out today that CNN was able to go in and talk to one of the suspected terrorists, how come the military hasn't been able to get after them and capture or kill the people? How come the FBI isn't doing this and yet CNN is?"

Chaffetz was referring to CNN's recent interview with Ahmed Abu Khattala, who Libyan and U.S. officials have described as the Benghazi leader of the al Qaeda-affiliated militia group Ansar al-Sharia -- one of many groups that filled the vacuum of authority following the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi.

Abu Khattala has boasted about his evasion of the law as early as October and later survived an assassination attempt.

How do these freaking boneheaded Republicans expect the FBI to investigate something in a foreign country? If they were not so obviously trying to pump life into their fantasy "scandal" by any means possible, including using the news of a new director of an agency that has no involvement with operations on foreign territory, it would be laughable. Maybe a mandatory, remedial civics class is in order for Republican politicians.

with the President's Middle East Policy. These people are like snakes. I'm pretty sure Chaffetz knows why, just as much as he knew who attacked that compound in Benghazi from Day one. Just like his buddy Issa.

They are the same people helping their neocon Policies of regime change in the region. The same people fighting and transporting the weapons they got in Libya to Syria now or haven't he heard it from the CIA yet? That structure wasn't an embassy, so they need to stop the charade. It was only a disguise probably for the covert activities of the CIA. CNN has some NEO CONs working for them as expert commentators. Especially the ex Bush officer, that got ahold of Stevens diary before the FBI got there and leaked it to CNN. So how convenient to have a Republican now in charge of the FBI as well as the CIA.

Khattala is not responsible and CNN is being led up the garden path on this. CNN is a news org and the FBI is a an arm of the US government and subject to adhering to the rules and regulations of Libyan government while operating on their soil. They are not free to willy nilly round up and interrogate suspects.

another charade by Chaffetz, trying to bring down the Obama Administration. Chaffetz probably already knows the answers just like he already knew about Benghazi. Don't forget, he personally took a trip over there to snoop around, without inviting any Democrats.

The Libyans don't even have control of their own Government because of so many armed groups. The biggest U.S. authority in that country is the CIA, which Chaffetz knows. You don't see him asking the CIA either.

The FBI investigates FEDERAL crimes.... not international ones.

Because if you're not ... Pay attention.

Terrorism abroad is a law enforcement issue. The proper response is to use legal authority and arrest the so-called "terrorist."

However, if that's not an option and the local government doesn't help, that means terrorism abroad isn't a law enforcement issue.

Therefore there are limited options. We get the local authorities to intervene and arrest the suspected perp. But as the Snowden Affair has made clear, we don't have extradition treaties with everyone.

Another option is black ops. We send in somebody to carry out an extra-judicial killing, we kidnap the guy, whatever.

A third option is military. There's a mysterious explosion that turns out to be caused by a Hellfire missile fired from a drone that inexplicably took off from an airbase near Kandahar and just happened to ill somebody in Benghazi.

Of course, there's the fourth and final option (that I can think of, anyway). We just make loud noises and say if the guy's even in a country that we have an extradition treaty with, well, we'll have an extradition squad ready for him. Then we wish him a nice day because that's it, we're hamstrung and the "terrorists win."
