NY WWII airman's remains arrive home decades later

Source: AP-Yahoo

CHRIS CAROLA

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Many saluted, some cried and a few held signs.

But for 70 miles, hundreds of people paid their respects to a World War II airman who died in combat in the South Pacific almost 70 years ago and was finally returned to his upstate home on Friday.

Funeral director Vincent Iocovozzi, who escorted Sgt. Dominick Licari's remains from the Albany airport to the small town of Frankfort, said there's "only one word that describes this: unbelievable."

"He's a man who has been dead longer than most people have been alive, but he's a hero coming home," Iocovozzi said.

As the son- combat veteran of Vietnam- of a WW2 combat veteran ,now deceased I too would wish everyone thank one. They're disappearing rapidly. I'm not surprised his remains were recovered from New Guinea. My father fought there on the ground as a combat engineer and once described it as tree covered but straight up and down and knee deep in mud.About the only place he disliked more was the Philippines where he also fought and was wounded receiving a Purple Heart. It's somewhat comforting to know the retrieval process never really ends.
