Governor to launch new purge of Florida voter rolls

Source: Miami Herald

Gov. Rick Scott will soon launch a new hunt for noncitizens on Florida’s voter roll, a move that’s sure to provoke new cries of a voter “purge” as Scott ramps up his own re-election effort.

Similar searches a year ago were rife with errors, found few ineligible voters and led to lawsuits by advocacy groups that said it disproportionately targeted Hispanics, Haitians and other minority groups. Those searches were handled clumsily and angered county election supervisors, who lost confidence in the state’s list of names.

“It was sloppy, it was slapdash and it was inaccurate,” said Polk County Supervisor of Elections Lori Edwards. “They were sending us names of people to remove because they were born in Puerto Rico. It was disgusting.”

The state’s list of suspected non-U.S. citizens shrank from 182,000 to 2,600 to 198 before election supervisors suspended their searches as the presidential election drew near.

...

Scott’s top elections official, Secretary of State Ken Detzner, is now creating a new list of suspected noncitizen voters by cross-checking state voter data with a federal database managed by the Department of Homeland Security.

Or what about Kathrine Harris, she has been involved in voter fraud before, Jeb Bush, now that does not sound like a reasonable name.

Well, most times, I guess. It's nice living near the beach (I'm in Brevard County, east coast), but I never really go to the beach. However, I really hate the cold. So, I stay. And vote. With a passion.

They don't even try to hide their attempts at voter disenfranchisement. They can't compete in a fair election on the merits, because their actions stink. So they take steps to prevent people who see what they're up to from voting so they can still "win" elections.

I hope Eric Holder gets off his butt and has the Justice Department move on this stuff--2014 will be here before we know it, and this looks to be a battle in Republican dominated states.

The people of Florida who didn't vote for Rick Scott and the other GOP crooks deserve better than what they're getting.

that they are supposedly trying to catch.

Shouldn't there be criminal penalties for denying a qualified citizen their voting rights?

If "purge" meant the names went on a separate list and if/when you showed up to vote, you still cast your vote but it gets cast provisionally while you are verified to be a US citizen. Then I'm fine with it. BUT, as the system works, this is pure partisan BS.

What a democracy - not! People with a felony record should be able to vote once they are released. People with names similar to felons shouldn't be kicked off the rolls. I'm not sure how that scheme wasn't prosecuted in 2000.

If we were a real democracy voting would be easy and open for all, there would be no use of computers, there would be strict monitoring of custody, and public counting.

Republicans, those flag wavers, have been caught on tape saying they want to keep as many people from voting as possible.

If everyone could vote, if there were fair non gerrymandered districts, if the fairness doctrine was still in place for the airwaves, if there was no ridiculous "Citizens United" - in other words a true and fair democracy - this would be a much different country today.

They are saying that the local election commission office is not doing their due diligence when new people register to vote and that some database in Washington DC that is not kept up to date is a better source so they will purge voters without their knowledge and turn them away when they attempt to vote. This is insane. Where is the solution to clean up the registration process if illegal people are being allowed to vote. To the extent there is a problem this is definitely the wrong solution. And lack of an appeal process is mind boggling.
