North Korea expanding Yongbyon nuclear complex, U.S. institute says

Source: CBS News

A U.S. institute tracking North Korea's nuclear weapons program says recent satellite photos show Pyongyang is doubling the size of its uranium enrichment plant, jibing with the country's announced plans to expand technology that can be used both to create energy and the core of nuclear weapons.

The imagery comes from two sources, satellite companies Digital Globe and Astrium Geoinformation Services, and was published by the Institute for Science and International Security on Wednesday. In an accompanying note, ISIS said the photos of the Yongbyon nuclear complex show construction under way to "effectively double" the size of the enrichment hall.

That, said ISIS, would allow North Korea to also double the number of centrifuges now enriching uranium. Revealing the existence of a uranium enrichment program three years ago, Pyongyang said the plant contained 2,000 centrifuges — machines that are linked up in series and spin uranium gas into material that can be used either to power reactors or arm nuclear weapons, depending on the degree of enrichment.

That means the 4,000 centrifuges that the space is apparently being expanded for could potentially make twice that amount, giving them the capacity to build up to four bombs a year — should the country decide to use them for that purpose.

comments below the article are very interesting in describing the leaders of Iran and North Korea. They see them as dangerous and madmen for having nuclear weapons. How many countries have nuclear weapons now, ever since the first ones were dropped?

As long as one country has nuclear weapons, it is ridiculous to think others are not going to want them. It changes the equation on the battlefield. Countries are less likely to threaten or attack another country with a nuclear arsenal, because of the fear of a nuclear War. It was during the Reagan Administration and the neo con right in this country started claiming they believed the u.S. could win a limited tactical nuclear war.

There are no distinctions in any country, because madmen are in Western countries too. Instead of looking for ways to get rid of all nuclear weapons, they started looking for ways to defend against nuclear attacks, with shields. There has not been an War between nuclear states in years since the drop of the bombs. It is exactly the opposite. Israel supposedly has a nuclear arsenal for self defense. Look at China. General McArthur, threatened to use nuclear weapons on China. The Chinese got their own nuclear arsenal very rapidly just because of that threat from the United States. Now the U.S. wants China on their side. I always view this country from its history and those running the Government. We've had a racist past and we still have the problem with many Americans, especially in the South. We have religious madmen in the U.S. too. Look at the Mormon religion, Romney came from and you can guess why he ignored the Palestinians' cause. He was coming from a point of racism, but was ignorant of what he was saying.
