Acid attack on two British women in Zanzibar

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania —

Two young British women were recovering after unknown attackers in the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar threw acid into their faces, the first such assault against foreigners in the popular tourist destination, police said Thursday.

Late Wednesday night, two men on a moped threw the acid at the 18-year old women as they strolled through the streets of Stone Town, the historical center of the capital of the semi-autonomous Tanzanian archipelago, splashing their faces, chests and hands.

“Police in Zanzibar have launched a manhunt, and we ask for public assistance in identifying the attackers,” deputy police commissioner Mkadam Khamis said.

The attack on the women, both working as volunteer teachers at a school on the island, came at the end of the Muslim holy month of fasting of Ramadan, and as people began to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

I hope the women recover. They're over there trying to help people! My gosh! I have been to Tanzania. It is a very poor country. The people are good and decent. Tourism is an important industry, so the PTB will find the guys who did this. "

4. Not covered up enough for the locals I'd guess. Acid seems to be a recurring "punishment"

for "uppity" females in most Muslim dominated areas as far as I can tell.

5. Whoever did is the biggest coward on the face of the earth.

They find beautiful women threatening. There's probably a deep-seated anger and resentment because pretty girls represent something that they can't have.

Acid is an interesting form of an attack because it's purely meant to figure. It's meant to turn a face into something unrecognizable and hideous. I can't even be able to comprehend how screwed up someone would have to be to try and do something like that, but they certainly are gigantic cowards.
