Mexico drug kingpin Caro Quintero ordered released

Source: Associated Press

MEXICO CITY — A Mexican court on Friday ordered the release of infamous drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero after 28 years in prison, overturning his conviction for the 1985 kidnap and killing of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent. The brutal murder marked a low point in U.S.-Mexico relations.

The court threw out Caro Quintero's 40-year sentence for the murder of Enrique Camarena, ruling he was improperly tried in a federal court for a crime that should have been treated as a state offense.

A court official who was not authorized to speak on the record said that Caro Quintero would be released because he had already served his time on other charges.

The 61-year-old Caro Quintero is considered the grandfather of Mexican drug trafficking. He established a powerful cartel based in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa that later split into some of Mexico's largest cartels, including the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels.

I had someone crap all over a post I made, and all over me, and when I retaliated, he/she reported me and my post was hidden. No appeal, no recourse. He did have a LOT more posts than me, so I am guessing that is why things turned out the way they did. Hey, how about that Jury trials on the DU are the same as Jury trials in real life! The more you have, the more the system bends to you.

Hopelessly corrupted, yes. Much less violence, also yes.

The joke used to be that the PRI regime didn't so much try to repress the drug trade as to manage it. The interruption in the PRI regime with Fox and Calderon was when the violence really started escalating. Funny, that.

Defense attorneys believe freedom is imminent for a second member of the trio of Mexican drug kingpins responsible for the 1985 slaying of a Drug Enforcement Administration agent, one of the capo's attorneys said Saturday. In the U.S., outrage grew over this week's surprise decision to overturn Mexican drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero's conviction in the notorious killing.

Caro Quintero walked free Friday after a federal court overturned his 40-year sentence in agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena's kidnapping, torture and murder. The three-judge appeals court in the western state of Jalisco ordered Caro Quintero's immediate release on procedural grounds after 28 years behind bars, saying he should have originally been prosecuted in state instead of federal court.

Also imprisoned in the Camarena case are Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo and Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, two of the founding fathers of modern Mexican drug trafficking, whose cartel based in the northwestern state of Sinaloa later split into some of Mexico's largest drug organizations.
