Sheriff Says Crosses to Be Put Where Bodies Found

Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced Thursday that his deputies will begin placing white crosses near the sites where authorities find bodies of immigrants who are dying in the desert after crossing the border from Mexico.

The sheriff stood amid about a dozen crosses to announce an effort that he said would serve as a reminder of just how dangerous the journey is from Mexico through the rugged desert of southern Arizona.

He said four bodies have been found in the last four days near Gila Bend after succumbing to the scorching desert heat. Two others were rescued this week.

Each cross also will be numbered and assigned GPS coordinates to aid his deputies in rescuing people who find themselves in distress in the area and can call for help, the sheriff said.

and a button that sets off a beacon and a signal, run with a small battery and solar panel like the do on life rafts for not too much money, I expect.

They know it will mean trouble, and I expect some would die before pushing it, but what the sheriff is proposing is just a bunch of markers so he can show people that "those" people are running across the border.

Short of that, digging a hole and putting 50 gallons of water in it, checking them periodically, would be the human thing to do. And, of course, that could set off a beacon as well.

Are these illegals that are trying to cross will they use the gps coordinates when calling 911? Why would they call 911 or even in some cases know to use 911? Will he require anyone crossing that area to have a cell phone so they can call for help?

You tell them you are at cross 456 and dispatch has the gps location of that cross in theory allowing a deputy to respond to the correct location.
