Sea Level Could Rise 3 Feet by 2100, Climate Panel Finds

Source: NY Times

By JUSTIN GILLIS

An international panel of scientists has found with near certainty that human activity is the cause of most of the temperature increases of recent decades, and warns that sea levels could conceivably rise by more than three feet by the end of the century if emissions continue at a runaway pace.

The scientists, whose findings are reported in a draft summary of the next big United Nations climate report, largely dismiss a recent slowdown in the pace of warming, which is often cited by climate change doubters, attributing it most likely to short-term factors.

The report emphasizes that the basic facts about future climate change are more established than ever, justifying the rise in global concern. It also reiterates that the consequences of escalating emissions are likely to be profound.

“It is extremely likely that human influence on climate caused more than half of the observed increase in global average surface temperature from 1951 to 2010,” the draft report says. “There is high confidence that this has warmed the ocean, melted snow and ice, raised global mean sea level and changed some climate extremes in the second half of the 20th century.”

FULL story at link.

A new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that the authors are now 95 percent to 100 percent confident that human activity is the primary influence on planetary warming.

So this effect is easy to predict, especially if you know the speed at which the oceans are warming. One twist is that the ocean temperatures may rise more quickly in hot area than in others, for example New Orleans may continue to experience a more rapid rise than other areas.

I guess one crowd of people believe now that these events were part of the Biblical flood or as some of the science fiction media would say, an eruption of water from inside the hollow Earth. We have to reinvent the wheel each generation or convince people to acquire science literacy to function in the modern world.

I come from a different era where science, fiction and religion were kept separate. For one group of people, none of this means anything as we can't search the net for basic data without the spin of religion taking up a lot of the search results.

For another, woo is the answer. For both, climate change does not exist in the terms you and I may understand (I say may because I don't speak for you, naturally) that is a thing easily proven by scientific observation.

Underlying the stupidest arguments is the fear that people will be found to be the cause, and not a cosmic event where we can say 'Not my fault! I didn't do anything!' and not get ready to adjust.

The argument has been political, and economic, and opposition to it is a social system unwilling or unable to change and still survive intact. I think we will survive, but have to change to do so. The religionists and CT folks actually do know that climate is changing. Both deny that it's the fault of humans, or that anything that goes wrong on this planet is caused by us. Because it would require changing our lives.

I've run into people who literally are moving into higher ground, afraid not only of flooding but some catastrophe set in place by the government as part of a massive plan to reduce the population. It's very hard to talk to many people about climate change as their minds just shut off.

I'm not stupid enough to think that it would not affect global economies, affect manufacturing, food supplies, etc.,

and other consequences like violence as people migrated/fled inland to higher places.

Million dollar mansions would be worthless while my shack in the bush would look pretty tempting.

I wouldn't be under water or anything, but my life would definitely change for the worse.

As would everyones.

Climate is not just changing, it's unstable and unpredictable

Well, except for the fact that weather forecasts are consistently wrong.

Last 2 years, it was unusually dry and hot summers in Northern Ontario.

This year, hardly a hot night, and more rain than we need - so far.

20 years ago - weather was predictable by the season alone.

Not anymore.

We have a problem, and I think our human habits are playing a huge part.

I fear we've done permanent irreversible damage to the planet.

Secondly, I mispelled "Canuck" on purpose, see how many would notice.

Not many have, and none in ten years have used that fact to try to insult me or my Canadian heritage/status.

Except you, Sir.

As I responded to someone else, I guess I'd better start using the sarcasm thingie.

I thought my "no worries" comment would be recognized as sarcasm.

It appears not. Thank you for the lesson.
