Tentative Deal Reached in Filner Sex Harassment Suit

Source: TPM

Embattled San Diego Mayor Bob Filner on Wednesday reached a tentative deal involving a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against him and the city.

City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said a proposed resolution was reached and it will be presented to the City Council during closed session Friday. No details were released, and it was unclear whether a resignation was part of the deal.

Mediation talks over the lawsuit filed by Filner’s former communications director Irene McCormack Jackson have occurred over the past three days.

Earlier Wednesday, a San Diego businesswoman stepped forward to say the leader of the nation’s eighth largest city had made unwanted sexual advances toward her, the latest woman to accuse Filner of sexual harassment.

Mediation talks between Filner and city leaders ended Wednesday with a proposed settlement, the city attorney announced.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, who is accused of sexually harassing some 18 women, reached a settlement with city leaders late Wednesday after a third day of mediation talks regarding his fate, the city attorney announced.

“We have reached a proposed solution,” Jan Goldsmith said at a news conference.

The proposed agreement, which has not been made public, will be voted on by the San Diego City Council in a closed session at 1 p.m. on Friday. Reports from local media have said Filner’s resignation was included in the talks possibly in exchange for agreeing to limit the mayor’s legal and financial exposure to lawsuits.

Either Filner resigns or he faces a recall election.

If he wishes to negotiate with the victims of his sexual harassment in order to settle their legal claims, that's fine. The subject of his remaining in office is not an appropriate topic for settlement discussions of such claims. Similarly, his potential exposure to any criminal liability is not an appropriate settlement topic.

Democracy is not the subject of negotiations, and the voters, through their representatives, need not offer Filner anything to do the right thing. If he refuses to resign, he should face recall, that is all.

Involving the city attorney due to Filner's personal problems shows that this has gone too far. Filner needs to resign and take responsibility.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner reaches mediation deal, city attorney says

San Diego (CNN) -- An agreement has been reached with San Diego Mayor Bob Filner after three days of mediation, the city attorney told reporters Wednesday.

City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said details of the proposed deal would remain confidential until they are presented to the City Council in a private meeting Friday at 1 p.m. (4 p.m. ET).

Immediately after the meeting, a report may be out at a public council meeting, Goldsmith said.

"Any rumors you hear about the proposal you may deem to be untrue because the people standing here are the ones who know of it and we have all committed ... that we will maintain the confidentiality of the mediation," he said while flanked by individuals involved in the effort.

Asked about Filner's response to the agreement, his attorney declined to comment.
