School gunman in Georgia 'had 500 rounds'

Source: BBC

21 August 2013 Last updated at 20:28 GMT

A man arrested at a school in the US state of Georgia on Tuesday was carrying 500 rounds of ammunition and an assault-style weapon, police say.

Michael Brandon Hill, 20, allegedly held two captive in the front office of the Atlanta-area academy, shooting at police outside, officials said.

One of the hostages, school clerk Antoinette Tuff, told local media she had talked him into surrendering.

Mr Hill was arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated assault.

That lady is a true hero. She could have been killed herself, but she just kept talking to the guy.

He played most of the 9-11 tape. That woman is a hero. And I liked what one of the women on his panel said. Her name escapes me, but anyway, she said she wishes these families will fight for better gun control laws just because their kids lived.

School Clerk In Georgia Persuaded Gunman To Lay Down Weapons

Tuesday's — in which a gunman with an assault rifle and other weapons entered the building — ended with no one being hurt after a school clerk apparently spent about an hour talking to the young man. She says she persuaded him to put down his gun and surrender.

"I just started praying for him," Antoinette Tuff . "I just started talking to him ... and let him know what was going on with me and that it would be OK. And then {I} let him know that he could just give himself up. ... I told him to put [the guns] on the table, empty his pockets. He had me actually get on the intercom and tell everybody he was sorry, too. But I told them, 'He was sorry, but do not come out of their rooms.' ... I give it all to God, I'm not the hero. I was terrified."

She prevented a lot of carnage that gets caused by enforcement agencies with their aggressive stance.

Kudos to Antoinette Tuff.

I can assure you that she did fine-might have been somewhat lucky-but she did fine. Unless you want to go back in time and see what could have happened because believe me, it could have gone the other way. 500 rounds is a whole lot of 'I mean business'.

The one of him at the Florida gun manufacturer (the same one who made the pistol with which he shot T. Martin), ordering a large-capacity shotgun, showing off a slender new profile, along with a big, triumphant grin. And no, I'm not making this up.

...and I just burned off a few at the gun range a couple of weeks ago. Due to recent panic buying, a box of 30 cartridges for an AK runs around $30 in some places. I remember when you could get that same box for about $8.

Needless to say, target practice gets taken just a bit more seriously when prices are driven up.
