Series of attacks kill 51 across Baghdad - police, medics

At least 51 people were killed and dozens wounded in a series of bombings and attacks across Baghdad on Wednesday, police and medical sources said, extending the worst wave of violence in Iraq in at least five years.
In one of the worst incidents a car bomb killed seven people and wounded 23 in Jisr Diyala in southeastern Baghdad, police and medics said.
A restaurant owner in Sadr City, a mostly Shi'ite district of Baghdad, described how a militant detonated a car bomb.
"A man parked his car in front of the restaurant. He got breakfast and drank his tea. (Then) I heard a huge explosion when I was inside the kitchen," the owner, who requested anonymity, told Reuters.

Of course I have no real clue.
I'm appalled at the fact that two factions al Qaeda are fighting in Syria and being supported and armed by big Saudi money (for one). One of those factions is "al Qaeda in Iraq and Syria". The flow of al Qaeda arms and terrorists across that border, or through Turkey, must be enormous, and the stockpiles of weapons must be getting to critical mass.
But motive? wtf could be the motive for the "Friends of Syria" BS that started this latest war-front? Ask Hillary, I guess... Whatever it is, I'm sure it's different than the motives of the al Qaeda mercenary forces funded by the despotic Saud family and/or laundered through mercenary corporations.
Sorry oberliner, I've gotta finish by saying that I'm totally confused when I try to image *motives* for any of the ME mess.

(2,205 posts)It will only be solved internally. Hard to say how that could and would happen. One thing for sure---the USA can't do anything.

(55 posts)Sunnis and Shia have been living in peace for decades and all of a sudden we start seeing these clashes. I dont know what it is but sectarian strive is not the main reason.
It's lazy and self-satisfied and bigoted and deflective thinking that passes off the slaughter in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and now Syria, as "those backward Arabs have been killing each other for centuries".
Several members of my own family have over the years spouted that sickeningly dirty meme, not once but several times over and over in various phrasings, and I don't keep silent. No matter that I get chastised for "getting political", while the spouting of such cheap, easy, and bigoted North American middle class memes are considered somehow "non-political" and "obviously true dinnertime conversation". Is it worth it to fight the memes of the corporate MSM? Yes. And in my case it's worked and my family no longer talks that way. And no longer votes that way, either.

(Reuters) - At least 71 people were killed and 201 wounded in a series of bombings and other attacks across Baghdad on Wednesday, police and medical sources said, extending the worst wave of sectarian bloodshed in Iraq for at least five years.
It was not immediately clear who carried out the attacks, which appeared coordinated, but Sunni Muslim insurgents including the al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq have significantly stepped up bombings this year.
